Learn Korean: Reading a Weekend Story – TOPIK 1 Level
Understanding the Goal
This article will guide you through reading a short Korean passage designed for learners taking the TOPIK 1 exam. The goal isn’t to master complex grammar but to build your vocabulary and get comfortable with basic conversational phrases used in everyday situations. We’ll focus on understanding what’s being said, not necessarily perfectly translating every word.
The Passage: 친구의 주말 이야기 (Friend’s Weekend Story)
Let’s read a conversation between two friends, Min-seo and Ji-hoon, discussing their weekends. This is the kind of dialogue you might hear in a casual setting.
Min-seo: 야! 오늘 뭐 했어? (Ya! Oneul meo haesseo?)
Ji-hoon: 음… 영화 보러 갔었어. (Eum… yeonghwa boreo gasseosseo.)
Vocabulary and Phrases
- 야! (Ya!) – Hey! (Informal greeting, used between close friends)
- 오늘 (Oneul) – Today
- 뭐 (Meo) – What
- 했어? (Haesseo?) – Did you do? (Informal question ending)
- 음… (Eum…) – Hmm… (Filler word, indicates thinking)
- 영화 (Yeonghwa) – Movie
- 보러 (Boreo) – To go and see
- 갔었어 (Gasseosseo) – Went (past tense of ‘go’) – Important: This uses the ‘-sseo’ ending for past tense, common in spoken Korean.
Note: Korean often omits subjects (‘I’, ‘you’, etc.) when clear from context. Using “했어?” is a natural way to ask about someone’s activities.
Continuing the Conversation
Min-seo: 아, 진짜? 뭐 영화 봤어? (A, jinjja? Mwo yeonghwa bwasseo?)
Ji-hoon: 액션 영화! 완전 재밌었어. (Action yeonghwa! Wanjeon jaeminwasseo.)
Min-seo: 오, 대박! 나도 같이 갈래? (O, daebak! Nado gachi gallae?)
Vocabulary & Corrections
- 아 (A) – Oh! (Expressing surprise or interest)
- 진짜? (Jinjja?) – Really?
- 뭐 (Mwo) – What
- 액션 영화 (Action yeonghwa) – Action movie
- 완전 (Wanjeon) – Completely, totally
- 재밌었어 (Jaeminwasseo) – Was fun / Interesting (past tense)
- 대박! (Daebak!) – Awesome! Great! (Common exclamation)
- 나도 (Nado) – Me too
- 같이 (Gachi) – Together, with
- 갈래? (Gallae?) – Do you want to go? (Informal invitation)
Common Mistake: Using formal language when speaking casually. Ji-hoon uses ‘갔었어’ and ‘갈래?’ which are perfect for friends.
Practice
- Listen to the conversation (you can find recordings online – search “Korean TOPIK 1 sample dialogue”).
- Repeat the phrases out loud, focusing on pronunciation.
- Try to understand the meaning of each sentence without translating it word-for-word.
- Imagine yourself in this situation and respond as Min-seo or Ji-hoon.
