Essential Classroom Phrases

Korean classrooms have specific ways of addressing students and asking questions. Let’s look at some key expressions:

• 안녕하세요 (Annyeonghaseyo) – Hello/Good morning/Good afternoon

This is the standard greeting you’ll use when entering a classroom. It’s polite and versatile.

• 선생님 (Seonsaengnim) – Teacher

Always address your teacher with “Seonsaengnim.” It shows respect.

• 이름이 뭐예요? (Ireumi mwoyeyo?) – What’s your name?

Useful for introducing yourself or asking a classmate their name. (Pronunciation: ee-reu-mee mwo-ye-yo?)

• 제 이름은…이에요 (Je ireumeun…ieyo) – My name is…

Example: “제 이름은 민수예요 (Je ireumeun minsu-yeyo) – My name is Minsoo.”

• 잘했어요! (Jalhaesseoyo!) – Good job!/You did well!

A positive reinforcement phrase. Be careful not to overuse it; sometimes, a simple “감사합니다 (Gamsahamnida)” – Thank you, is more appropriate.

• 다시 한번 해 보세요 (Dasi hanbeon hae boseyo) – Try again / Do it one more time

Common Classroom Questions & Requests

Here are some questions you’ll hear and phrases you’ll use:

• 이건 뭐예요? (Igeon mwoyeyo?) – What is this? (pointing to an object)

Very useful for quickly identifying objects. (Pronunciation: ee-gonmwo-ye-yo?)

• 다시 말해 주세요 (Dasi malhae juseyo) – Please say it again

If you didn’t understand something, this is the polite way to ask for a repeat.

• 도와주세요 (Dowajuseyo) – Help me, please.

Mistake: Saying “Annyeonghaseyo” to your classmates casually.
Correction: Use it primarily with teachers and older students.

Mistake: Using “아무개 (Amgu)” when you don’t know someone’s name. While technically correct, people prefer you to ask them their name first!
