TELC B1 Writing: Recommend a Restaurant

My Struggle (and Success!) with TELC B1 Writing: Recommending a Restaurant

Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin and still battling my German. It’s amazing, this city, the food, the people… but honestly, everyday conversations feel like a Herculean task sometimes. Especially when it comes to the TELC B1 Writing exam. They want me to be able to confidently write a recommendation for a restaurant, and frankly, the thought used to make my palms sweat. But I’m starting to get there, and I wanted to share what I’ve learned – specifically about how to approach that restaurant recommendation task.

The Initial Panic: “Wo soll ich hingehen?”

The first time I was asked, “Wo soll ich hingehen?” (Where should I go?), I completely froze. My brain just went blank. I mumbled something about “Pizza” because, well, that’s what I usually eat when I’m stressed. The woman I was talking to, Frau Schmidt, raised an eyebrow and said, “Pizza? In Berlin? Das ist… interessant.” (Pizza? In Berlin? That is… interesting). It was a wake-up call. Simply saying “Pizza” wasn’t going to cut it for the exam. I needed a structured approach.

Understanding the Task – The Key Elements

The TELC B1 Writing task is all about providing information and a reasoned opinion. It’s not just about listing features; it’s about persuading someone why they should choose a particular place. Here’s what I’ve learned I need to cover:

  • Introduction: Start with a friendly greeting and explain the context – why you’re recommending the restaurant. Example: “Hallo Herr Müller, ich wollte Ihnen ein Restaurant empfehlen…” (Hello Mr. Müller, I wanted to recommend a restaurant to you…)
  • Restaurant Details: Name, location, type of cuisine. “Das ‘Zum Goldenen Löwen’ liegt in der Hauptstraße 12. Es ist ein traditionelles deutsches Restaurant.” (The ‘Golden Lion’ is located on Hauptstraße 12. It’s a traditional German restaurant.)
  • Reasons for Recommendation: This is the most important part. Why is it good? What makes it special? “Die Atmosphäre ist sehr gemütlich und die Portionen sind riesig!” (The atmosphere is very cozy and the portions are huge!). Or, “Die Gerichte sind sehr lecker und frisch.” (The dishes are very tasty and fresh.)
  • Specific Dishes to Recommend: Don’t just say “good food”. Give examples. “Ich empfehle besonders die Schweinshaxe und den Kartoffelsalat.” (I especially recommend the pork knuckle and the potato salad.)
  • Price Range: This is crucial! “Die Preise sind eher mittel. Ein Hauptgericht kostet etwa 15-20 Euro.” (The prices are rather average. A main course costs about 15-20 Euros.)
  • Closing: End with a friendly closing and an offer to answer any questions. “Ich hoffe, Sie können das Restaurant gerne ausprobieren. Wenn Sie noch Fragen haben, melden Sie sich bitte!” (I hope you will gladly try the restaurant. If you have any further questions, please let me know!)

Practice Makes (Almost) Perfect – My Messy Attempts

I started practicing by writing emails to friends (in German, of course!). The first few were… disastrous. I used overly formal language (“Ich schreibe Ihnen mit freundlichem Gruß”), got completely tangled in the grammar, and wrote sentences that made absolutely no sense. I realised I was trying to sound intelligent rather than simply being helpful.

One email, to my colleague, Thomas, read like this (I’m leaving out the actual errors for brevity): “Sehr geehrter Herr Thomas, Ich möchte Ihnen ein Restaurant empfehlen, welches sehr gut ist und welches…”. He politely responded, “Das ist… interessant. Kannst du das bitte klarer formulieren?” (That is… interesting. Can you please phrase that more clearly?). It was a painful learning experience!

A Small Victory – The “Zum Goldenen Löwen” Email

After a lot of practice, and with the help of a language exchange partner, I managed to write a reasonably good email recommending “Zum Goldenen Löwen.” It wasn’t perfect, but it was coherent!

Here’s a simplified version:

“Hallo Herr Schmidt,

[Your Name]”

My Ongoing Challenges & What I’m Working On

I’m still struggling with using more varied vocabulary. I tend to repeat words like “gut” (good) and “lecker” (delicious) a lot. I’m working on expanding my range by using words like “ausgezeichnet” (excellent), “köstlich” (delicious), and “bevorzugt” (preferred).

I also need to work on my sentence structure – sometimes I construct sentences that sound a little clunky. I’m trying to read more German articles and books to get a feel for the natural flow of the language.

Final Thoughts for Fellow Learners

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Seriously, everyone does. The key is to learn from them. Focus on clear communication, not perfect grammar. Practice writing regularly, even if it’s just short emails. And most importantly, don’t panic! The TELC B1 Writing exam is challenging, but with practice and a little perseverance, you can do it. Viel Erfolg! (Good luck!)
