TELC B1 Writing: Discuss Social Media Advantages

Tackling the TELC B1 Writing Task: Social Media – It’s More Complicated Than You Think

Okay, so I’m here in Berlin, six months now, and let’s be honest, the German language is fierce. I’m working as a freelance translator, which is amazing, but it’s also constantly pushing me to improve my writing, especially for the TELC B1 Writing exam. They want us to be able to discuss opinions, give reasons, and really articulate ourselves – and that’s what this article is about. Specifically, we’re looking at using social media as a topic. It seemed like a good one because, you know, everyone uses social media, right? But I’ve found it’s a surprisingly tricky area to navigate, both in German and when trying to answer exam questions.

The Initial Challenge: Understanding the Prompt

The first time I saw the prompt, “Discuss the advantages of using social media,” I immediately started thinking about all the cool stuff – connecting with friends, finding information… But then I realised I didn’t know how to really discuss it in a way that would impress someone taking a B1 exam. In German, I kept stumbling over phrases. I wanted to say something like, “Social Media ist super für die Kommunikation, aber…” (Social media is great for communication, but…) but it just came out clunky.

I had a conversation with my colleague, Thomas, the other day and asked him, “Thomas, wenn ich über die Vorteile von Social Media schreiben muss, was ist wichtig?” (Thomas, when I have to write about the advantages of social media, what’s important?) He said, “Es geht nicht nur darum, was du denkst. Du musst Gründe nennen und Beispiele.” (It’s not just about what you think. You need to give reasons and examples.) That really clicked with me.

Realistic German Conversations – Social Media in Daily Life

Let’s look at some real-life examples. I was at a Kaffeeklatsch (coffee get-together) with some new friends last week, and they were arguing about Instagram. One said, “Ich finde Instagram total nutzlos. Nur noch Bilder von Food und Influencern!” (I think Instagram is totally useless. Just pictures of food and influencers!) Another replied, “Nein, nein! Es ist perfekt, um mit meiner Familie in Kontakt zu bleiben. Schicke ihnen Fotos von meinen Reisen!” (No, no! It’s perfect to stay in touch with my family. I send them photos of my travels!).

Notice the different opinions – nützlos (useless) versus perfekt (perfect). In the exam, I need to be able to express both sides of an argument. I need to be able to say something like, “Manche Leute finden Instagram nutzlos, aber ich denke, es ist nützlich für die Kommunikation mit Freunden und Familie.” (Some people find Instagram useless, but I think it’s useful for communicating with friends and family.)

Common Mistakes and How to Fix Them

I’ve made so many mistakes. Early on, I kept overusing complex grammar structures – things I’d learned in my German course, but that sounded completely unnatural when I spoke. For example, I tried to say, “Die Nutzung von Social Media bietet zahlreiche Vorteile.” (The use of social media offers numerous advantages.) It just sounded so stiff!

The key is simplicity. The examiners are looking for clear, concise communication, not perfect grammar. Focus on using common phrases and building sentences that flow naturally. I was corrected a few times for using too many subjunctive clauses – wenn (if) statements. It’s much better to say, “Wenn ich Social Media nutze, kann ich mit meinen Freunden in Kontakt bleiben.” (If I use social media, I can stay in touch with my friends.)

Practical Vocabulary for the Exam

Here’s some useful vocabulary I’ve been collecting:

  • Social Media: Social Media (obviously!)
  • Vorteile: Advantages
  • Nachteile: Disadvantages
  • Kommunikation: Communication
  • Informationen: Information
  • Influencer: Influencer
  • Kontakt halten: To stay in touch
  • Online-Community: Online community
  • Vernetzt sein: To be connected
  • Bildung: Education (Social media can be used for learning!)

Putting It All Together: A Sample Response (Rough Draft!)

Okay, let’s say the question is: “Discuss the advantages of using social media.” Here’s a very rough draft of what I might write in German (and then a slightly polished version):

  • Rough Draft: “Social Media ist ein sehr gutes Ding. Es ist toll, weil man mit seinen Freunden sprechen kann. Ich finde es auch gut für Informationen. Aber manchmal ist es auch schlecht, weil man viel Zeit damit verbringt. Ich denke, es ist gut, aber man muss vorsichtig sein.” (Social media is a very good thing. It’s great because you can talk to your friends. I also think it’s good for information. But sometimes it’s bad because you spend a lot of time on it. I think it’s good, but you have to be careful.)
(Social media has many advantages. It allows me to stay in touch with friends and family and to get current information. However, using it can also be time-consuming. Therefore, it’s important to use social media consciously and responsibly.)

Final Thoughts – It’s About Practice

Seriously, the key to passing the TELC B1 Writing exam is practice. I’m planning on writing a lot of practice essays – on different topics, of course – and getting feedback from my tutor. And I’m going to keep listening to how people actually talk about social media. I’m going to keep making mistakes, and I’m going to keep learning. Das ist der Weg! (That’s the way!). Good luck to everyone else tackling this!
