My German Journey: Tackling the TELC B1 Writing – “Describe Your Best Vacation”
Okay, so here I am, living in Munich for almost two years now. It’s amazing, truly, but let’s be honest, the German language was rough at first. I’d moved here for a job in marketing, and while my English was fine for work, I felt like I was constantly missing out on conversations, especially with my colleagues and the neighbours. That’s when I realised I needed to seriously up my German game, and the TELC B1 Writing exam seemed like a really practical goal. They say you need to be able to write convincingly, and “Describe Your Best Vacation” was the task they gave us – a perfect starting point, right?
Why This Task Matters for the Exam
The TELC B1 writing tests aren’t about perfect grammar (though good grammar helps!). They want to see if you can communicate effectively. “Describe Your Best Vacation” forces you to use a range of vocabulary related to travel, experiences, and emotions. It’s a chance to show you can organise your thoughts, use appropriate phrases, and write in a way that’s understandable. Plus, it’s a topic everyone can relate to – memories of holidays!
My First Attempt (and My Biggest Mistake!)
I started planning my description weeks in advance. I thought, “Okay, I’ll just talk about my trip to Italy last summer. Easy peasy!” I wrote down a bunch of words: “sonnenbeschienen” (sun-drenched), “die Toskana” (Tuscany), “lecker” (delicious), “ein wunderschönes Erlebnis” (a wonderful experience). I started writing, feeling pretty confident, and then… I completely lost the thread. It was rambling, confusing, and full of awkward phrases.
My biggest mistake? I focused too much on the individual words instead of telling a story. I said things like, “Das Wetter war sehr sonnenbeschienen. Die Toskana ist ein wunderschönes Erlebnis. Es war lecker.” It just sounded robotic! The examiner probably would have marked it down for lack of cohesion.
Key Vocabulary and Phrases for Your Description
Let’s get practical. Here are some phrases and words that came in handy – and that I definitely should have known before my first attempt:
- “Ich war im Urlaub/mit Freunden/mit meiner Familie…” (I was on vacation/with friends/with my family…) – Start with this to introduce your trip.
- “Mein Lieblingsurlaub war…” (My favorite vacation was…) – Clearly states the topic.
- “Ich war in… ” (I was in…) – Essential for location. “Ich war in Berlin” (I was in Berlin).
- Describing the Weather: “Es war sonnig,” “Es hat geregnet,” “Es war kalt” (It was sunny, it rained, it was cold). Don’t just say “it was nice weather”; be specific!
- Describing Activities: “Ich habe gehüpft,” “Ich habe gemalt,” “Ich habe gegessen” (I jumped, I painted, I ate). Use verbs!
- Expressing Opinions/Emotions: “Es war toll!”, “Ich habe mich sehr gefreut,” “Es war wunderschön.” (It was great!, I was very happy, it was beautiful).
A More Realistic Conversation (and a Little German)
Let’s imagine I’m talking to a colleague, Klaus, about my vacation.
- Me: “Klaus, du glaubst es nicht, mein letzter Urlaub war super! Ich war in Kroatien mit meiner Familie.” (Klaus, you won’t believe, my last vacation was great! I was in Croatia with my family.)
- Klaus: “Ach, Kroatien? Ist das nicht schön? Was hast du denn gemacht?” (Oh, Croatia? Isn’t that beautiful? What did you do?)
- Me: “Ja, es war wunderschön! Wir waren am Meer, haben gebadet und gegessen. Das Essen war wirklich lecker – frischer Fisch und Meeresfrüchte! Und die Sonne… es war sonnenbeschienen den ganzen Tag!” (Yes, it was beautiful! We were at the beach, we swam, and we ate. The food was really delicious – fresh fish and seafood! And the sun… it was sunny all day!)
- Klaus: “Das klingt toll! Ich muss auch mal wieder Urlaub machen.” (That sounds great! I also need to take a vacation.)
Structuring Your Description – A Simple Plan
Here’s how I’m planning to approach the TELC B1 writing task:
1. Introduction: Briefly state where you were and with whom. (e.g., “Mein Lieblingsurlaub war im Sommer 2023 in der Schweiz mit meinen Freunden.”)
2. Setting the Scene: Describe the location – where was it? What was it like? (e.g., “Die Schweiz ist ein wunderschönes Land mit Bergen und Seen.”)
3. Activities: What did you do? Use specific verbs and details. (e.g., “Ich habe wandern gegangen, die Seilbahn gefahren und in einem kleinen Dorf gegessen.”)
4. Concluding Sentence: Summarize your experience and express how you felt. (e.g., “Es war ein unvergessliches Erlebnis, und ich würde es jederzeit wieder machen.”)
Don’t Panic! Practice Makes Perfect
Honestly, the more I write, the better I’m getting. I’m focusing on telling a story, not just listing words. I’m practicing with this task and similar prompts. The TELC B1 Writing exam is designed to be achievable – just keep practicing, and remember, it’s about communicating your experience, not impressing the examiner with perfect grammar. “Viel Glück!” (Good luck!).
