TELC B1 Writing: Decline an Invitation

Mastering the Kunst of Saying “Nein”: Declining Invitations for TELC B1 Writing

Okay, so I’ve been living in Berlin for almost a year now, and honestly, it’s amazing. The culture, the food, the history… it’s incredible. But let’s be real – it’s also overwhelming sometimes. And part of that overwhelming feeling comes from trying to navigate the social scene. You get invited to so many things – house parties, concerts, even just a quick Bier with colleagues. But saying “no” politely, and properly, is a big part of feeling comfortable and confident. That’s where TELC B1 Writing comes in. They’re testing us on this, and I realized I needed to actually practice how to decline invitations, not just that I should. This article is all about that.

The Initial Invitation & My First Mishap

Last week, my colleague, Markus, invited me to join him and a few others for Grillen (barbecuing) at his apartment. He texted me: “Hey! Tonight, Grillen at my place, 19 Uhr. Bring a drink! It’ll be cool!” I was happy to be included, I really was. But, I had already promised my friend Sarah I’d help her move a bookcase – a really heavy bookcase – and I was seriously exhausted.

So, I replied: “Super Idee! Ich komme!” (Super idea! I’m coming!). Big mistake. Huge.

Markus messaged back immediately: “Cool, see you then!” And I realised I’d just completely committed without thinking. That’s when I started to understand how crucial it is to be clear and polite when declining. It’s not just about saying no; it’s about saying no well.

Building Your German Declining Vocabulary

Here’s the key vocabulary I’ve found really helpful for saying “no” to invitations:

  • Es tut mir leid: I’m sorry. (This is essential!)
  • Ich kann leider nicht: Unfortunately, I can’t.
  • Ich habe leider schon etwas anderes geplant: Unfortunately, I already have something else planned.
  • Vielen Dank für die Einladung: Thank you very much for the invitation.
  • Das klingt toll, aber…: That sounds great, but…
  • Ich muss passen: I have to skip it.
  • Viel Spaß!: Have fun! (A nice touch to show you wish them well.)

Example Dialogues & How to Respond

Let’s look at some realistic dialogues and how I’m trying to respond:

Scenario 1: Markus invites me to a party.

  • Markus: “Hey! Party tonight at my place, 22 Uhr! Lots of people, good music. Come if you can!”
  • Me (Correct Response): “Hallo Markus! Vielen Dank für die Einladung! Es tut mir leid, aber ich habe leider schon etwas anderes geplant. Ich muss passen. Viel Spaß!” (Hello Markus! Thank you very much for the invitation! I’m sorry, but unfortunately, I already have something else planned. I have to skip it. Have fun!)

Scenario 2: A colleague invites me for a Kaffee (coffee)

  • Colleague: “Kaffee am Montag? Wir müssen uns unterhalten.” (Coffee on Monday? We need to catch up.)
  • Me (Correct Response): “Das klingt toll, aber ich habe leider am Montag keine Zeit. Ich muss passen. Vielleicht ein anderes Mal?” (That sounds great, but unfortunately, I have no time on Monday. I have to skip it. Maybe another time?)

Common Mistakes & How to Avoid Them

I’ve definitely made mistakes! Early on, I just said “Nein” bluntly, which felt… impolite. I also struggled with offering an alternative. Here’s what I learned:

  • Don’t just say “Nein.” Always start with an expression of gratitude. “Vielen Dank für die Einladung!” is crucial.
  • Give a brief, honest reason (without over-explaining). “Ich habe leider schon etwas anderes geplant” is usually enough. You don’t need to tell them why you’re busy.
  • Offer a polite closing. “Viel Spaß!” shows you’re wishing them well.

TELC B1 Writing & the Tone of Your Response

Remember, the TELC B1 Writing exam is assessing your ability to communicate effectively. Your tone needs to be polite, appropriate, and clear. Don’t be overly formal – a friendly and natural tone is better. Practicing these dialogues will help you build the confidence to decline invitations gracefully.

My Next Steps: Practicing & Relaxing

I’m planning to write out some more example responses to common invitations and even record myself saying them. It feels a bit silly at first, but it’s a great way to get comfortable with the phrases. Most importantly, I’m trying to remind myself that it’s perfectly okay to say “Nein” – it’s about respecting my own time and energy, and being a good friend. Und natürlich, wishing everyone viel Spaß! (And of course, wishing everyone have fun!)
