TELC B1.2 Writing: Recommend a Hobby

My German Adventure: Tackling the TELC B1.2 Writing Task – Recommending a Hobby

Okay, deep breath. Moving to Berlin felt like stepping into a film – amazing, overwhelming, and honestly, a little terrifying. My German is…well, let’s just say it’s a work in progress. I’m trying to get to B1.2 level, and the TELC exams seem like a really good way to track my progress, especially with that writing task about recommending a hobby. It feels crucial for feeling genuinely settled here. I’ve spent the last few weeks focusing on it, and I thought I’d share what I’ve learned, particularly how to actually do it, not just study about it.

The Initial Panic – “Ich bin verloren!”

I just stared at the page. “Schreiben Sie…” panic. I wanted to immediately start scribbling down perfect sentences, but it felt so…stiff. I realized I was focusing on sounding correct rather than actually communicating. I needed to approach it differently.

Talking it Through: My First Conversation

I started talking to Frau Schmidt, my neighbor. She’s a retired Englischlehrerin and, thankfully, patient. I explained the task to her. “Ich muss einen Text schreiben, um einem Freund zu empfehlen, was er machen könnte,” I said, stumbling over the words. She corrected me gently, “Nein, nein! ‘etwas empfehlen’ – you need to recommend something. It’s more natural.” She then gave me a realistic example: “Sag ihm: ‘Du solltest Klavier spielen lernen!’” (Tell him: ‘You should learn to play the piano!’). That sounded so much better! I also learned that using ‘Interessant’ was good, but adding a little explanation – “vielleicht weil es entspannend ist” (maybe because it’s relaxing) – made it sound more personal.

Vocabulary to Grab Now

Here’s some essential vocabulary I’ve been focusing on:

  • etwas empfehlen: to recommend something
  • ein Hobby: a hobby
  • entspannend: relaxing
  • interessant: interesting
  • aufregend: exciting
  • kreativ: creative
  • gemeinsam etwas machen: to do something together
  • vielleicht: maybe
  • weil: because

I practiced saying these out loud constantly. I even wrote them down on little flashcards – Karten – which Frau Schmidt told me were a brilliant idea.

A Realistic Example – My Attempt (and a Correction!)

Okay, so I actually wrote a draft. It was…rough. Here’s a snippet:

“Hallo Max! Ich empfehle dir ein Hobby. Du solltest Malen! Es ist interessant. Weil, Kunst ist gut für die Seele. Und vielleicht du kannst es mit Freunden machen?”

(Hello Max! I recommend you a hobby. You should paint! It’s interesting. Because, art is good for the soul. And maybe you can do it with friends?)

Frau Schmidt read it and said, “Gut! Aber… ‘Kunst ist gut für die Seele’ is a bit formal. Try something like: ‘Es hilft, sich zu entspannen’ – it helps you relax.” She pointed out that my phrasing felt a bit too… textbook-y. She was right. It needed to sound like me talking, not like a German textbook explaining things.

Building Up the Paragraph – Structure Matters

I realized the TELC exam wants to see I can structure a paragraph. Here’s how I’m building it:

1. Introduction: Start with a friendly greeting and state the purpose – you’re recommending a hobby. (“Hallo Lisa! Ich möchte dir etwas empfehlen…” – Hello Lisa! I want to recommend something to you…)

2. The Hobby: Clearly state the hobby. (“Ich denke, du solltest…”) (I think you should…)

3. Reasons: Give at least two reasons why you recommend it. Use phrases like “weil…” (because…) and “vielleicht…” (maybe…).

4. Closing: A friendly closing remark. (“Ich hoffe, es gefällt dir!” – I hope you like it!)

Small Wins and Future Goals

I’m still making mistakes – I still get ‘die’ and ‘der’ mixed up sometimes (it’s incredibly frustrating!), and my pronunciation needs work. But I’m getting there. My goal is to be able to confidently write a short paragraph on this topic, explaining why I recommend a hobby to a friend, and to actually understand what they’re saying back to me. I’m also working on listening comprehension – that’s a huge part of the exam, right?

The TELC B1.2 Writing task feels like a really practical challenge, and I’m determined to succeed. Los geht’s! (Let’s go!)
