TELC B1.2 Writing: Explain How AI Helps With Homework

My Struggle (and Small Wins) with German Homework – Aiming for B1.2

Okay, so here I am, a few months into living in Berlin and finally tackling my German homework. Honestly, it’s been… challenging. Coming from [my native language], the grammar feels like climbing Mount Everest sometimes! But this particular TELC B1.2 writing task – explaining how AI helps with homework – actually made a lot of sense. It’s not about the tech itself; it’s about how we use tools, right? Let me tell you about my journey.

The Initial Panic (Und das Gefühl der Hilflosigkeit)

The first assignment was terrifying. “Schreiben Sie eine kurze Erklärung darüber, wie KI bei den Hausaufgaben helfen kann.” Short explanation… in German! My immediate instinct was to Google “how to write an essay in German” – which is exactly what I shouldn’t have done, I know. I started rambling about ‘künstliche Intelligenz’ and ‘algorithmische Unterstützung,’ completely lost. I even got into a mini-panic trying to remember the correct word for “assistance” – it’s “Unterstützung,” right? It felt like everyone else in my Sprachkurs just understood this stuff! My German teacher, Frau Schmidt, gave me a sympathetic look and said, “Nicht so schlimm, Alice. Wir arbeiten daran.” (Not so bad, Alice. We’ll work on it.)

Small Steps with Helpful Tools – And Avoiding Big Mistakes

Then I started using some tricks that actually felt… useful. Firstly, I realized I needed to break the task down. Instead of trying to write a perfect essay from scratch, I focused on one paragraph at a time. Secondly, and this is key, I used online translators judiciously. Let’s say I was stuck with a phrase like “wie man Hausaufgaben macht” (how one does homework). Typing it into Google Translate gave me “how to do homework.” That immediately told me the phrasing wasn’t quite natural. I then refined it to “Wie kann KI bei meinen Hausaufgaben helfen?” – which felt much better and more common.

I had a little conversation with my friend Luke, who’s also studying German. He said, “Du musst die Sätze einfach aussprechen und dich fragen: ‘Klingt das natürlich?’” (You just need to speak the sentences and ask yourself: ‘Does that sound natural?’). That was brilliant! It really highlighted how awkward some of my phrasing sounded.

Real-World Examples – And a Little Confusion

The assignment asked me to explain how AI helps with homework. I thought about my own situation. Let’s say I have an essay due on the history of Berlin. Instead of painstakingly researching everything, I used Google Scholar (which is really useful!) and it suggested some keywords and relevant articles. It wasn’t like a robot writing the whole thing for me – it was just narrowing down my search!

I told Frau Schmidt about this, and she nodded. “Ja, das ist ein Beispiel,” she said. “KI kann helfen, Informationen zu finden und zu organisieren.” (Yes, that’s an example. AI can help to find and organize information). But then I realized I was struggling to explain why it was helpful – like the underlying process. This is where things got tricky. I wanted to say something like “KI hilft mir, schneller Informationen zu finden” (AI helps me to find information faster), but I kept getting stuck on the correct word order!

A Small Victory – And a Lesson Learned

Finally, after several revisions and a lot of questioning (mostly in German!), I managed to write a reasonably coherent explanation. It wasn’t perfect, definitely not B1.2 level yet, but it was mine. More importantly, I understood the core concept: AI isn’t replacing our brains; it’s augmenting them.

I realised the biggest hurdle wasn’t the grammar or vocabulary, but the confidence to actually use resources and ask for help – even if it felt a little embarrassing at first. “Ich muss mich trauen, Fragen zu stellen!” (I need to be brave enough to ask questions!).

And you know what? That feeling of accomplishment, even with my shaky German, was pretty amazing. Next assignment: explaining how AI helps with ordering food in a restaurant! Wish me luck!
