My YouTube Disaster: Learning German Through a Travel Vlog

Okay, so, this is going to sound a bit embarrassing, but I’m trying to level up my German, and it’s…complicated. It started with an idea, a really bad idea actually. My friend Lena and I, we’re both living in Munich now, and we thought, “Let’s make a YouTube travel vlog!” – brilliant, right? We were aiming for TELC B1.2 level, you know, enough to actually understand people and, crucially, to be understood. The TELC exam is proving to be a surprisingly helpful target.

The Concept: “Munchen Uncovered”

The whole point was to show our new life here, the good, the bad, and the ridiculously expensive beer. We were going to film ourselves exploring the city, talking about our experiences, and basically trying to build a small audience. We even had a logo – a tiny pretzel! Lena’s really good at the filming and editing, and I was supposed to be the “voice of reason” and, crucially, the German.

The First Shoot: Disaster Strikes

The first shoot was supposed to be a simple overview of Marienplatz, the main square. We had a script – “Guten Tag everyone! Welcome to ‘Munchen Uncovered’! Today we’re in Marienplatz, the heart of Munich!” – and we started rolling.

It immediately fell apart. Lena was talking so fast about the Glockenspiel, and I was trying to chime in with details about the Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall) and…well, I completely blanked. I said, “Es ist sehr schön hier, aber der Glockenspiel ist ein bisschen teuer.” (It’s very beautiful here, but the Glockenspiel is a bit expensive.) Which, admittedly, isn’t wrong, but it sounded incredibly awkward and judgmental. Lena burst out laughing.

She quickly corrected me, explaining that the Glockenspiel is a historical tradition and a tourist attraction, so it’s expected to cost money. “Du könntest sagen: ‘Es ist ein tolles Schauspiel!’” (You could say: ‘It’s a great spectacle!’) She was so patient, which was amazing.

Vocabulary Breakdown: Useful Phrases

That whole experience hammered home some key vocabulary we needed for travel vlogs – and for everyday life, really. Here are some phrases I’ve found super useful:

  • “Was kostet das?” (What does that cost?) – Honestly, I still use this constantly when I’m ordering food or looking at souvenirs.
  • “Ich verstehe nicht.” (I don’t understand.) – Essential! I’ve learned to say this without feeling completely lost. Often, just saying it calmly prompts someone to speak more slowly.
  • “Wie sagt man das auf Deutsch?” (How do you say that in German?) – This has saved my sanity more times than I can count.
  • “Es ist sehr… (It is very…) – Lena constantly reminded me to use adjectives to describe things! “Es ist sehr interessant!” (It’s very interesting!).

Misunderstandings and Corrections

Another thing I realized is that my pronunciation is terrible. I’m still struggling with the “r” sound – it feels like my tongue is completely rebelling. Lena keeps gently correcting me. “Versuch es noch einmal!” (Try it again!). I made another massive blunder when I tried to ask for directions. I asked someone “Wo ist die Toilette, bitte?” (Where is the toilet, please?) and they looked at me like I’d asked them to perform brain surgery. Lena explained that “die Toilette” is a bit formal and I should use “die Toilette” or just “die WC.”

My Progress (and Frustrations)

Despite the embarrassing moments, I’m actually making progress. I’m starting to pick up common phrases and my confidence is slowly growing. I’m using the TELC materials to focus on specific areas like describing things – which is perfect for describing the sights around me. I even managed to say “Ich finde München wunderschön!” (I find Munich beautiful!) without completely butchering the pronunciation.

Lena’s really been a huge help, and honestly, learning through this crazy YouTube project is way more engaging than any textbook. I still have a long way to go, but at least now I know the basics – and how to ask for more beer. Prost! (Cheers!). I’m aiming for B1.2 – let’s see if I can actually create a decent travel vlog by then!
