TELC B1.1 Bildbeschreibung: Friends recording a TikTok video

My TikTok Fiasco: Leveling Up My German with TELC B1.1

Okay, so I’ve been living in Berlin for six months now, and let’s be honest, my German is… patchy. I can order a Kaffee mit Milch without completely embarrassing myself, and I understand roughly half of what my colleagues say at work. But I really want to feel confident, you know? I want to be able to actually talk to people, not just nod and smile nervously. That’s why I’m tackling the TELC B1.1 exam – it feels like the next logical step. And, strangely enough, a TikTok video has become a major part of my learning.

The Idea: A TikTok Challenge

My friend, Lena, and I were scrolling through TikTok, laughing at all the silly trends, when it hit me. We should do one! A short video about our daily lives, a bit of German fun. We decided to film ourselves making a Kuchen (cake) – a classic, right? Easy enough, we thought. Little did I know, it would be a crash course in German conversation.

The Recording – And the Immediate Confusion

We started setting up the shot, Lena was directing, and I was trying to explain how to cream the butter and sugar. “Okay, lass uns die Butter und den Zucker schlagen, jetzt langsam!” I said, feeling pretty proud of myself. Lena, though, just stared at me.

“Was schlagen wir langsam?” she asked, completely bewildered.

It hit me then – I was so focused on saying the words correctly that I hadn’t explained why we were doing it slowly. “Ach, langsam, damit es nicht zu viel Luft bekommt,” I blurted out, realizing I needed to be more descriptive. That’s when I learned the importance of adding context, nicht nur vocabulary.

Practicing Descriptions – Bildbeschreibung Time

The TELC B1.1 exam focuses heavily on Bildbeschreibung – describing pictures. Lena suggested we used the video as practice. We had to narrate what was happening, and it was brilliant.

“Sieht ihr, ich habe die Eier jetzt aufgeschlagen,” I said, pointing to the bowl. “Und dann gib ich den Zucker dazu. Es ist wichtig, dass die Eier ganz gut aufgeschlagen sind, sonst wird der Kuchen nicht so luftig.” (See, I’m using past perfect tense – gut aufgeschlagen – it’s a key B1 concept!). Lena was asking questions, prompting me to elaborate. “Warum ist es wichtig?” “Weil… weil die Luftblasen sonst rausgehen!” It felt really practical, like I was actually using the language.

Common Mistakes & Corrections

We stumbled a lot, of course. I kept getting the genders of things wrong – “Die Zucker ist sehr süß” (The sugar is very sweet – Schlecht! – It’s “Der Zucker”). Lena patiently corrected me, saying, “Der Zucker ist süß, du kannst nicht sagen ‘Die Zucker’”. Another time, I tried to say “Ich mache einen Kuchen” and completely butchered the pronunciation. She gently said, “Machst du einen Kuchen? – It’s a more natural way to say it.” Little corrections like that are gold dust!

Useful Phrases & Vocabulary

Here are some phrases I picked up from filming the TikTok:

  • Lass uns… (Let’s…) – Perfect for suggesting ideas.
  • Es ist wichtig, dass… (It’s important that…) – Helps explain the ‘why’ behind things.
  • Wie gesagt (As I said) – A good way to repeat something.
  • Das ist richtig! (That’s right!) – Useful to acknowledge corrections.
  • Was meinst du? (What do you think?) – A great way to engage in conversation.

Beyond the Cake – Real-World Application

The best part is, this isn’t just about memorizing words. It’s about understanding how Germans talk. I’m learning to use the language in a natural, flowing way. I’m even starting to understand the nuances of conversation, like when people interrupt each other (which happens a lot!) and how to politely respond.

My Next Steps (And Your Tips!)

I’m going to keep filming these silly videos. I’m also going to focus on listening more – watching more TikToks, listening to German music, anything to get used to the rhythm of the language.

I’d love to hear from anyone else studying for the TELC B1.1 exam! Any tips on practicing Bildbeschreibung? Or maybe anyone has a funny story about a language mishap? Let me know in the comments below! Bis bald! (See you soon!)
