My Domino’s Deutsch Adventure: Leveling Up with TELC B1.1

Okay, so let me tell you, getting settled in Germany has been… intense. Beautiful, amazing, frustrating, and confusing all at once. I’m living in Munich now, which is fantastic, but the everyday stuff? That’s where the learning really hits you. I’m focusing on getting to B1.1 level for my work – it’s really important to be able to handle customer interactions, and honestly, just to feel a bit more confident. Right now, I’m totally obsessed with practicing situations, and I wanted to share my experiences with a particularly useful one: ordering delivery from Domino’s.

The First Time – A Complete Disaster

The first time I tried to order from Domino’s, it was… a mess. I walked in, feeling a bit nervous, and tried to say, “Ich möchte bitte eine Pizza.” (I would like please a pizza.) The guy behind the counter, a really friendly-looking older gentleman named Herr Schmidt, just stared at me. He clearly understood the words, but he kept saying, “Entschuldigung? Was?” (Excuse me? What?). I blurted out, “Eine große Pizza mit Salami!” (A large pizza with salami!) He looked completely bewildered. Turns out, I’d accidentally said “Eine große Pizza mit Schwein!” (A large pizza with pig!). He burst out laughing – a really good laugh – and corrected me. It was embarrassing, but he was so patient and helpful. He explained that “Salami” is a type of cured meat, and I should have been more careful.

Ordering Like a Pro (Almost)

After that, I started to pay more attention. I realized I needed to learn some key phrases. Here’s what I’ve been practicing:

  • “Ich hätte gerne…” (I would like…) – This is the phrase to use.
  • “Was empfehlen Sie?” (What do you recommend?) – Great for getting suggestions.
  • “Kann ich die Pizza mit…?” (Can I have the pizza with…?) – Useful when customizing.
  • “Zum Mitnehmen, bitte.” (To take away, please.) – Crucial for delivery!

I even managed a slightly smoother conversation the next time. I walked in, took a deep breath, and said, “Ich hätte gerne eine mittelgroße Pizza mit Paprika und Pilzen. Zum Mitnehmen, bitte.” (I would like a medium-sized pizza with peppers and mushrooms. To take away, please.) He confirmed the order and said, “Das wird schnell!” (That will be quick!).

Dealing with the Rider – A Small Mishap

Then came the delivery. The young guy arrived, super energetic, wearing the Domino’s jacket. He asked, “Ist das [My Address]?” (Is this [My Address]?). I confirmed it, and he said, “Ich bin gleich wieder da!” (I’ll be back soon!). I was so excited! But then, a few minutes later, I checked the door and he wasn’t there. I called the store, and the lady on the phone, Frau Müller, explained, “Er ist etwas überlastet. (He’s a bit busy.) Don’t worry, your pizza will be there in ten minutes.” It was a slight panic, but Frau Müller’s calm reassurance helped.

Vocabulary I’ve Learned (and Still Need to Learn!)

Here’s a list of words and phrases that have been really helpful:

  • Pizza: (Obviously!)
  • Salami: (Avoid this one!)
  • Paprika: (Bell peppers)
  • Pilze: (Mushrooms)
  • Zwiebeln: (Onions)
  • Käse: (Cheese)
  • Zum Mitnehmen: (To take away)
  • Bitte: (Please) – Seriously, always use it!
  • Gleich: (Soon)

My Next Steps – Keeping the Momentum

I’m planning to keep practicing these scenarios. I’m thinking of ordering from Domino’s every week, even if it’s just a small pizza. It’s a low-pressure environment to use my German and build my confidence. I’m also trying to listen to German conversations around me – even just snippets of people talking on the street. I’ve realized that making mistakes is okay – everyone makes them! Herr Schmidt and Frau Müller were both so kind and helpful, and that’s what’s truly important. My goal is to be able to handle these everyday situations with ease, and hopefully, avoid accidentally ordering a pizza with pig! Ich glaube, ich kann das schaffen! (I believe I can do it!)
