My First Week in Berlin: A Beginner’s Adventure
Getting Lost (and Found) – My First Day
Okay, so Berlin is… intense. Seriously. I’d been dreaming about this move for months – a new job, a new city, a chance to really start over. But honestly, the first day was just… overwhelming. I arrived at my apartment near Schönhauser Allee, a tiny little place, and immediately got completely lost trying to find the nearest Supermarkt (supermarket). I was trying to say “Wo ist der Supermarkt?” to a man, but I completely butchered the pronunciation, and he just stared at me like I was speaking Martian! Eventually, a friendly student, Lena, heard me struggling and corrected me. She even walked me to the Edeka – it was a huge relief. “Gern geschehen!” she said, which I later learned means “You’re welcome!” I felt so incredibly grateful.
Pyramids and Pizza: A Totally Surreal Day
Yesterday was even stranger. I decided to explore a little, and I ended up near the Neues Museum. I really wanted to see the bust of Nefertiti. It was amazing! I saw die Pyramiden (the pyramids – the exhibit, not actual pyramids!). Seriously, it was completely awe-inspiring. I was trying to take a photo and I asked a woman “Hast du eine Minute?” (Do you have a minute?) – which is a pretty standard way to ask for help in Germany. She was so kind and helped me adjust my camera.
Then, I got hungry! I stumbled upon a little pizzeria and we haben Pizza gegessen (we ate pizza). It was delicious – a Maisdampfnudel mit Schokocreme (sweet potato dumpling with chocolate cream) to start, and then a Salami Pizza. I’m pretty sure I gained five pounds just from the pizza, but it was totally worth it. Afterwards, I saw a Katze (cat) sleeping under a bench. It was so sleepy – ist schläfrig (is sleepy!).
Learning German – It’s Hard, But…
I’m trying really hard to learn German, and honestly, it’s viel gelernt (a lot learned) so far, but it’s a lot of work. I’m using an app called Duolingo, and I’m also trying to listen to German music and podcasts. I made a little mistake when I was trying to order coffee this morning. I accidentally asked for a Meerkat (Meerkat!) instead of Milch (milk)! The barista just laughed and said, “Nein, nein! Milch!” (No, no! Milk!). I’m still laughing about that. I told him, “Ich habe mich verrechnet!” (I made a mistake!).
More Adventures – And a Little Mishap
Today, my colleague, Erik, took some Fotos (photos) of me. He’s a really nice guy, and he’s been helping me with my German. He even showed me how to say “Ich habe ein Foto gemacht” (I took a photo). He said, “Gut gemacht!” (Good job!).
I was trying to buy a newspaper and I got completely confused by the prices. I kept saying “Wie viel kostet das?” (How much does that cost?) and the shopkeeper just looked at me patiently. I finally figured it out, and I realized I need to pay closer attention to the numbers!
The Museum Was Interesting
I finally visited the Museum. Das Museum war interessant (The museum was interesting). There were lots of paintings and sculptures. It was a good way to take a break from studying and just wander around. I felt like I was starting to get a little bit of the Berlin vibe – busy, creative, and full of surprises.
Looking Ahead
I know I’m going to make mistakes – lots of them. But that’s okay! I’m determined to keep learning and to keep exploring this amazing city. Ich bin aufgeregt (I’m excited!) about what’s to come. Maybe tomorrow, I’ll actually find my way to the Brandenburg Gate without getting hopelessly lost! Wish me luck!
