My First Steps into Smart Home – And a Little German!
Okay, so things are still pretty new here in Berlin. I’ve been living here for about six months now, working as a freelance translator, and honestly, it’s been a huge adventure – and a bit of a challenge! One thing I’ve really been thinking about lately is making my apartment a bit more… well, comfortable. And that led to a conversation with a colleague, Alice, and it all started with this exchange:
“Hallo Klaus! Wie geht es dir? Hallo Alice, gut, danke! Und dir? Mir geht es auch gut.”
(Hi Klaus! How are you? Hi Alice, good, thanks! And you? I’m also good.)
It felt a bit formal at first, but now it’s starting to feel normal.
The Idea of a Smart Home
I was chatting with Alice and she mentioned she was considering getting a smart home system. “Echt? Das ist super!” (Really? That’s great!) she exclaimed. And suddenly, I was hooked. I started reading about it online, and the idea of controlling my lights, heating, and maybe even my blinds with my voice… it’s seriously appealing.
I’m trying to learn as much German as possible, and I realized that a lot of the conversation around this was happening in German. It felt like a good way to immerse myself.
Google Home vs. Amazon Echo – Decisions, Decisions!
I spent ages trying to figure out what to get. Alice has a Google Home, and she says it’s really practical. “Der ist echt praktisch.” (It’s really practical). I spoke to another colleague, Ben, and he was all about the Amazon Echo. “Ich denke, ich werde wahrscheinlich einen digitalen Assistenten nehmen, vielleicht einen Google Home.” (I think I will probably take a digital assistant, maybe a Google Home.) The conversations were full of “Und du?” (And you?) and “Was denkst du?” (What do you think?) It’s definitely a different way of talking, but I’m slowly getting used to it.
Lichter, Heizung, Vorhänge – The Potential
I’m seriously considering getting smart lights. I keep picturing myself saying, “Schalte die Lichter ein!” (Turn on the lights!) while I’m working from home. I also want to be able to control the heating remotely, especially if I’m going away for a few days. (Maybe you can control your heating with the assistant if you’re traveling?) That’s a brilliant idea! Saving energy is important, right?
I’ve even read that you can use these devices to control your curtains. “Ich habe auch gelesen, dass man mit solchen Geräten die Vorhänge steuern kann.” (I’ve also read that you can control the curtains with these devices.) Imagine – automatically closing the blinds when the sun gets too strong!
Automation – It’s Getting Crazy!
My goal is to automate as much as possible. I want to be able to say, “Mach die Wohnung gemütlicher!” (Make the apartment cozier!) and have the system adjust the lighting and temperature. I know it sounds a bit crazy, but it seems incredibly convenient. “Das wird meine Wohnung in Zukunft sehr bequem machen.” (This will make my apartment very comfortable in the future.)
Small Mistakes, Big Learning
Of course, I’ve already made a few mistakes. The other day I was trying to say “Stell die Heizung runter” (Turn down the heating) to the Google Home, but I accidentally said “Stell die Heizung an” (Turn on the heating!). Alice laughed and told me, “Mach dich nicht so schwer! (Don’t make it so difficult!)” which roughly translates to “don’t overthink it!” It was a good reminder to be patient.
Next Steps and More German
I’m planning on buying an Amazon Echo – the reviews seem really good. I’m going to start learning more specific German phrases related to home automation. I think I’ll start with things like “Wie hoch ist die Temperatur?” (What’s the temperature?) and “Wie viel kostet das?” (How much does that cost?).
And, of course, I’m looking forward to continuing the conversations with Alice and others about all of this. “Ich freue mich schon darauf, alles zu testen!” (I’m already looking forward to testing everything!) It’s a really exciting step in settling into a new life, and learning a new language along the way. Bis bald! (See you soon!)
