Talking about hobbies and interests – Grammar: mögen and gern

My First Cracks at Talking About My Hobbies in German

Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin and still feeling like I’m constantly playing catch-up with the language. It’s not bad, not even close, but there are definitely little hurdles, and today I want to talk about one that’s been tripping me up: talking about what I like – my hobbies and interests. It feels so important to actually connect with people, you know? Just nodding politely doesn’t really cut it.

The Trouble with “Mögen” and “Gern”

I’ve been hearing phrases like “Ich mag…”, “Ich gerne…” and “Ich möge…” everywhere, and honestly, at first, they all sounded the same. I kept using “mögen” when I should have been using “gern” and it felt…wrong. The worst was when a colleague, Thomas, asked me, “Was machst du gern?” and I blurted out, “Ich mag das Wetter!” He just stared at me. Turns out, he wasn’t asking about the weather, he was asking what I enjoy doing. Ugh.

“Mögen” – Like, I Actually Like It

“Mögen” is definitely about liking something, but it’s a bit stronger than “gern.” Think of it as a genuine preference. Here’s an example I heard in a conversation at the Kaffeeklatsch (coffee afternoon) with my flatmates, Lena and Markus:

Lena: “Was machst du am Wochenende?” (What do you do on the weekend?)

Me: “Ich mag Lesen. Ich mag auch Filme schauen.” (I like reading. I also like watching films.)

Lena: “Ah, interessant! Ich mag Musik hören.” (Ah, interesting! I like listening to music.)

See? “Ich mag” shows a real fondness. It’s a bit more deliberate. I even use it when I’m talking to myself when I’m trying to decide what to do! “Ich mag einen Spaziergang.” (I like a walk.)

“Gern” – Enjoying It, More Relaxed

“Gern” is much more casual. It’s about enjoying something, without necessarily saying you love it. It’s like saying “I find it enjoyable.” It’s incredibly common, and I really need to be using it more.

Here’s a more realistic example:

Markus: “Hast du Hobbys?” (Do you have hobbies?)

Me: “Ja, ich gerne wandern.” (Yes, I enjoy hiking.)

Markus: “Das ist toll! Ich gerne kochen.” (That’s great! I enjoy cooking.)

Notice how “gern” feels much more natural when talking about activities. It’s like saying “I find it pleasurable” rather than “I really like it.”

My First Mishaps – And How I Learned

Okay, so back to Thomas and the weather. I was trying to be friendly and said, “Ich mag das Wetter!” – because, you know, it’s been sunny lately. He explained patiently that “gern” is the better choice for hobbies. He said, “Du kannst sagen, ich gerne spazieren gehe.” (You can say, I enjoy going for walks.) It clicked! I felt so stupid.

Another time, I was talking to a new colleague, Sarah, and she asked, “Was machst du in deiner Freizeit?” (What do you do in your free time?). I immediately said, “Ich mag Fußball!” (I like football!) She just smiled politely and said, “Das ist schön.” (That’s nice.) It wasn’t a bad response, but I realized I hadn’t really explained why I liked it. I quickly added, “Ich gerne mit Freunden spielen.” (I enjoy playing with friends.)

Useful Phrases to Get You Started

Here are some phrases I’m trying to remember:

  • “Ich mag…” – I like… (Strong preference)
  • “Ich gerne…” – I enjoy… (More casual enjoyment)
  • “Ich mag… und ich gerne…” – I like… and I enjoy… (Combining preferences)
  • “Was machst du gern?” – What do you enjoy doing?
  • “Ich mag es, [activity]” – I like [activity] (e.g., “Ich mag es, Musik zu hören.”) – I like listening to music.

My Goal for Next Week

My goal for next week is to actually use “gern” correctly in at least five conversations. I’m going to focus on talking about my hobbies – hiking, reading, and (embarrassingly) attempting to cook German recipes (so far, mostly burnt toast). I’m also going to actively listen for how others use “mögen” and “gern” and try to absorb the nuances.

Wish me luck! And if you see me saying “Ich mag das Wetter!” again, please gently correct me!

Alles Gute! (All the best!)
