Vocabulary & Phrases – Your Room

Here’s some useful vocabulary to get you started:

• la habitación – the bedroom
• la casa – the house
• el escritorio – the desk
• la cama – the bed
• la silla – the chair
• la mesa – the table
• una ventana – a window
• una puerta – a door
• un armario – a wardrobe/closet
• el suelo – the floor
• colores – colors (e.g., rojo – red, azul – blue, verde – green)

Common Mistakes and Corrections

Many learners make these mistakes when starting:

• Incorrect: “Mi habitación es grande.” – This is okay, but adding ‘y’ before ‘grande’ makes it more natural. Correct: “Mi habitación es grande y cómoda.” (My room is big and comfortable.)
• Incorrect: “Yo tengo una cama.” – You don’t need “yo” when talking about what you have. Correct: “Tengo una cama.”
• Common issue with gender agreement: Remember that many nouns in Spanish are masculine or feminine. For example, the desk (escritorio) is masculine so you’ll say “un escritorio” (a desk). Don’t worry too much about this now, but be aware of it!
