Learning Spanish: Dates and Seasons – Your First Steps (A1)
Why Start with Dates and Seasons?
Hola! Starting your Spanish journey with dates and seasons is a fantastic idea. It’s simple, practical, and immediately useful for everyday conversations. These topics introduce you to basic numbers, days of the week, months of the year, and common adjectives – all key building blocks for communication.
Understanding Numbers in Spanish
Let’s start with numbers 1-12, as these are super important:
- Uno (OO-no) – One
- Dos (Dohs) – Two
- Tres (Trehs) – Three
- Cuatro (KWAH-troh) – Four
- Cinco (SEEN-koh) – Five
- Seis (Says) – Six
- Siete (See-EH-teh) – Seven
- Ocho (OH-choh) – Eight
- Nueve (NWEH-beh) – Nine
- Diez (Dee-ehs) – Ten
- Once (OHN-seh) – Eleven
- Doce (DOH-seh) – Twelve
Common Mistake: Many beginners say “Dos” and “Diez” with a very strong ‘s’ sound. Try to soften it! It’s okay to stumble, though.
Saying the Date
To talk about dates, we use “el” (the) before the day and “el” (the) before the month. Remember that Spanish uses a different word order than English!
- Today: Hoy es… (Oy eh…) – Today is…
- For example: Hoy es lunes, el 26 de mayo (Oy eh LOON-seh, el 26 deh mahyoh) – Today is Monday, the 26th of May.
- The days of the week: lunes (LOON-seh), martes (MAHR-tehs), miércoles (MREE-dee-ahs), jueves (HWAY-sehs), viernes (BREE-ehs), sábado (SAH-bah-dah), domingo (DOHN-mee-goh)
- The months of the year: enero (Eh-NYEH-roh), febrero (Beh-EH-broh), marzo (MAHR-choh), abril (ah-BREE-ool), mayo (mah-yoh), junio (hoo-NEH-oh), julio (HOO-lee-oh), agosto (ah-GOHS-toh), septiembre (seh-PTEH-moh), octubre (OHK-too-beh), noviembre (no-VEM-breh), diciembre (dee-SEHR-meh)
Talking About Seasons
We use the adjectives ‘frío’ (cold) and ‘caloroso’ (hot) to describe the seasons. “Estación” means season.
- El invierno (el een-VEE-roh) – Winter – It’s cold!
- La primavera (lah preh-MEE-rah) – Spring – It’s warm and beautiful!
- El verano (el vah-NAH-roh) – Summer – It’s hot!
- El otoño (el oh-TOH-noh) – Autumn/Fall – It’s cooler.
Example Conversations
Here are some simple dialogues:
Person A: ¿Cómo te llamas? (KOH-moh teh YAH-mahs?) – What’s your name?
Person B: Me llamo Ana. Hoy es viernes, el 15 de marzo. (Meh YAHM-oh AH-nah. Oy eh VREE-ehms, el 15 deh MAR-choh.) – My name is Ana. Today is Friday, the 15th of March.
Person A: ¡Qué bueno! El verano es genial. (Keh BWEH-noh! El vah-NAH-roh eh hehn-YAL) – That’s great! Summer is wonderful.
