We’re going to focus on arranging a simple meeting with someone who also speaks Spanish. The goal isn’t perfection; it’s communication and building confidence.

This is based around CEFR A1 level (Nuevo Español en Marcha A1) which prioritizes real-life scenarios and getting your message across.

Key Vocabulary for the Meeting

• Hola – Hello
• ¿Cómo estás? – How are you?
• Bien, gracias – Good, thank you.
• ¿Qué tal? – What’s up?/How’s it going? (More informal)
• Me gustaría… – I would like…
• Quiero… – I want… (Can sound demanding, use “me gustaría” more often at this level)
• ¿A qué hora? – At what time?
• ¿Dónde? – Where?
• Un café – A coffee
• El parque – The park
• ¡Genial! – Great!

Common Mistakes and Corrections

• Mistake: “Quiero ir” (I want to go) – This can sound demanding. At A1, use “Me gustaría ir…” (I would like to go…)
• Correction: “Me gustaría ir al parque.” (I would like to go to the park.)
• Mistake: Saying “Dónde” before specifying a place.
• Correction: “El café está en la calle Mayor.” (The coffee is on Main Street.) – then follow with “¿Dónde?” if needed for clarification.
• Mistake: Forgetting “Por favor.” – It’s always polite!

Tips for a Successful First Meeting

• Keep it Simple: Stick to basic phrases like those in the dialogue above. Don’t try to use complex grammar yet.
• Don’t Worry About Mistakes: Everyone makes mistakes when learning! The most important thing is that you are trying to communicate. Ana will appreciate your effort, even if your Spanish isn’t perfect.
• Be Polite: “Por favor” and “Gracias” go a long way.
• Confirm the Details: Repeat back the time and place to ensure you both agree. ¿A las tres de la tarde en ‘El Café Central’? (At three o’clock in the afternoon at ‘El Café Central’?)
• Preparation: Write down a few key phrases in Spanish beforehand – it will help you feel more confident.
