Moving to Berlin – And the Hunt for a Job

Okay, so things are… well, they’re settling in here in Berlin. It’s amazing, seriously. The art, the food, the people… it’s completely overwhelming in the best way. But the overwhelming part also means the job hunt is fierce. I’m an immigrant, you know? I’ve been here six months, trying to get my bearings, and my German is… improving. Slowly. I still butcher sentences, but people are generally patient. I’m focusing on software engineering – it feels like a good fit, and honestly, a little bit of a safety net. I’m still learning the ropes of the German job market, and the whole “Bewerbungsgespräch” (interview process) thing is a bit intimidating.

Hearing About Dräger Safety

Recently, a friend – let’s call him Markus – told me he’d seen an advert for a Software Engineer role at Dräger Safety. “Hallo, habt ihr schon was von der Stelle als Software Engineer bei Dräger Safety gehört?” he asked, excitedly. “Ja, ich habe mir die Stellenanzeige angesehen.” I’d actually glanced at it on Indeed.com (link: Read More It sounded interesting, especially because they were focusing on Cloud Operations and Java. I find those things fascinating, actually. I’ve been doing a bit of personal learning with Java, trying to get up to speed.

Indeed.com and the Search Begins

Markus and I started chatting about it. He’d also checked Indeed.com, and he was looking for jobs there too. “Ich bin auf Indeed.com gefasst und habe mir auch die Jobs dort angesehen, vielleicht finden wir da was passendes.” He mentioned he was looking at jobs in the “Cloud Operations” area, and he used the search term “Java.” It sounded professional, you know? I didn’t really understand what it meant at first, but he explained it to me.

Decoding Cloud Operations and Microservices

He said, “Im Grunde geht es darum, die Videoüberwachungssysteme für sicherheitskritische Arbeitsstätten zu betreiben und weiterzuentwickeln.” (Basically, it’s about operating and developing video surveillance systems for safety-critical workplaces). That was a bit of a head-scratcher at first! Then he added, “Sie bauen Microservices für die Verarbeitung der Videostreams in Azure auf und sorgen dafür, dass alles reibungslos läuft.” (They’re building microservices for processing the video streams in Azure and making sure everything runs smoothly). Microservices… Azure… it all sounded very complex.

The Job Description and My Initial Reaction

The job description was long. It talked about everything from backend development to optimizing cloud services. “Klingt nach viel Verantwortung,” Markus said. (Sounds like a lot of responsibility). Honestly, I felt a bit overwhelmed. But then he said, “Aber die flexiblen Arbeitszeiten, das Sabbatical und die betriebliche Altersvorsorge machen es schon attraktiver.” (But the flexible working hours, sabbatical, and company pension scheme make it even more attractive). That definitely caught my eye. And the phrase “you build it, you run it” – that really appealed to me! It’s a whole-system approach, which is exactly what I’m looking for.

The Good Stuff: Collaboration and Structured Thinking

“Absolut!” (Absolutely!) I said, feeling a bit more confident. “Ich finde es gut, dass sie Wert auf eine strukturierte Arbeitsweise und lösungsorientiertes Denken legen.” (I think it’s good that they value a structured approach and solution-oriented thinking). That’s really important to me; I’m not comfortable with chaos.

Company Benefits and Perks

Then we got to the benefits. “Was haltet ihr von den angebotenen Leistungen, wie z.B. den 30 Tagen Urlaub? Die sind schon sehr gut!” (What do you think of the offered benefits, like the 30 days of holiday? They’re really good!). Thirty days of vacation! And he mentioned they offered a “Fitnessstudio-Ratssetzung” (fitness studio membership) – that’s fantastic. There’s a really nice gym near my flat in Kreuzberg, but a company-sponsored one would be amazing.

Safety and Long-Term Thinking

“Und die Tatsache, dass sie Wert auf Sicherheit legen, ist natürlich auch ein wichtiger Punkt.” (And the fact that they value safety is, of course, also an important point). That’s a huge plus. Dräger Safety, I know, deals with life-saving equipment. It’s a really serious industry.

Next Steps – A Deep Dive

“Vielleicht sollten wir uns mal genauer die Stellenbeschreibung anschauen und diskutieren, welche unserer Fähigkeiten am besten passen.” (Maybe we should look at the job description in more detail and discuss which of our skills fit best). Markus and I agreed to do that. I’m going to spend some time really understanding what they’re looking for and seeing how my skills – especially my Java knowledge – align.
