Social media and online communication – Grammar: Modal particles

My First Week in Berlin: A Language Learner’s Diary

Okay, so, let me start by saying: things are… intense. I’ve been in Berlin for about a week now, moved here from Manchester for a job as a junior developer at a small startup called ‘PixelBloom’. It’s exciting, definitely, but navigating everything – the language, the bureaucracy, the sheer size of the city – is proving to be a lot more challenging than I’d anticipated. I’m determined to get better, though, and honestly, just talking to people is the best way to learn, right?

The First Conversation – And My Massive Mistake

It all started with a simple “Na, was machst du so?” to a girl I met at the coffee shop near my apartment. Her name is Lena. She wasn’t doing much, just scrolling on Instagram. “Hey Lena! Nicht viel, nur ein bisschen Insta scrollen. Und du?” I replied, feeling pretty good about myself. Then I completely blanked. I asked her, in perfect, earnest English, “What are you plotting?”

Lena stared at me, utterly bewildered. “Plotting? Ich… was?” It took a good minute of frantic gesturing and me repeating “I meant, what are you doing?” before she finally understood. She burst out laughing, which, in retrospect, was probably a good reaction! I learned two things: 1) Germans don’t usually “plot” (whatever that means), and 2) My English needs serious work, especially when I’m trying to be overly casual.

She explained that “was machst du so?” is the really standard way to ask what someone is up to. I was trying to sound cool and familiar, and it just sounded…weird.

“Stress mit der Arbeit” – A Familiar Feeling

After that, we started chatting properly. She told me she was having a lot of stress with her work. “Mir geht’s ganz gut, aber ich habe ehrlich gesagt viel Stress mit der Arbeit.” It was strangely comforting. It’s a universal feeling, isn’t it? The work thing. I confessed that I was feeling a bit overwhelmed too, juggling the new job, the mountain of paperwork, and trying to find my way around. “Ach, das kenn ich! Die kann echt nerven machen.” We both agreed that our bosses could be seriously annoying.

She gave me some good advice, “Du solltest mal ‘ne Pause machen!” I completely agreed. I needed a break.

Finding Little Moments of Relief

Then she suggested something brilliant. “Vielleicht ein bisschen entspannter Content gucken?” I immediately thought of silly cat videos – they’re seriously a global phenomenon. “Gute Idee! Ich schau gerade ein paar lustige Katzenvideos an. Das hilft immer.” And it did! It was genuinely relaxing.

“Echt? Dann schau mal mit mir mit!” Lena exclaimed, joining in the feline fun. “Klar, los geht’s!” We ended up watching a whole playlist of cats doing ridiculous things. It was surprisingly therapeutic.

Plans for the Future (and Maybe a Little Help)

“So, jetzt ist es aber schon richtig lustig.” We both said it at the same time. “Ja, total! Vielleicht sollten wir uns mal wieder online treffen, wenn wir nicht so beschäftigt sind?” We decided to schedule a video call next week. “Ja, das wäre toll! Ich bin dabei. Super! Dann bis bald! Bis bald!”

It’s little things like this that I’m realizing are going to be key to feeling more settled here. Learning German isn’t just about memorizing grammar rules, it’s about building connections and understanding a culture.

Vocabulary I’m Working On

Here’s a quick list of things I’m actively trying to use and understand:

  • Na, was machst du so? – What are you up to? (Very informal greeting)
  • Ich habe viel Stress mit der Arbeit. – I’m having a lot of stress with work.
  • ‘Ne Pause machen – To take a break (informal abbreviation of “eine Pause machen”)
  • Entspannter Content – Relaxing content
  • Lustige Katzenvideos – Funny cat videos

Next Steps

I’m planning on spending a lot more time just listening. I downloaded a German podcast for beginners and listen to it while I commute. I’m also trying to be bolder and actually speak German, even if I make mistakes. Lena was right, it’s the only way to really improve. And who knows, maybe I’ll even learn to “plot” something properly… eventually. 😉
