My First Impressions of Athereon: Learning German Through AI

Okay, so this is a little weird to write, but I’m really excited about the possibility of working at Athereon. I’ve been living in Berlin for about six months now, trying to build a life and, of course, my German is… evolving. I saw the job posting – Java development – and it seemed perfect. But then I started hearing about this “AI-First” thing, and honestly, it sounded a bit daunting. I wanted to understand it better, especially before a potential interview.

Meeting the Team – And the Concept of “Explorer-Spirit”

I met with one of the developers, let’s call him Markus, during a coffee break. I was already a little nervous, trying to order a Latte, bitte without completely butchering the pronunciation. Markus was super friendly, though. He started talking about this whole idea of using AI tools – specifically GitHub Copilot and Cursor – and it was… different.

I’d played around a little with GitHub Copilot before, mainly just seeing how it suggested code snippets. Markus explained that it’s about actively integrating them into your workflow. He mentioned they were using Cursor too, which I hadn’t heard of. Apparently, it helps with things like generating documentation.

“It’s about working more efficiently and achieving better results,” he said, and it did sound promising. I admitted, “Ich habe mit GitHub Copilot etwas Erfahrung, aber ich bin gespannt, wie viel wir tatsächlich davon nutzen können, um meine Arbeit zu beschleunigen.” (I have some experience with GitHub Copilot, but I’m curious how much we can actually use it to speed up my work). Brainstorming with AI – A Really Enthusiastic Team

Markus then asked me what I thought would happen if someone suggested using AI. I realized that this wasn’t just about following instructions. It was about a constant learning process, and honestly, a bit of playful experimentation. It felt like a really open environment, which is something I was hoping for.

Collaboration is Key – From Product to Backend

Markus also emphasized that it’s not just about individual developers. They want to work with other teams – like the Produktmanagement (Product Management) or the Backend-Team (Backend Team) – to figure out how AI can fit into the bigger picture. “Und wir fördern auch die Zusammenarbeit mit anderen Teams, wie dem Produktmanagement oder dem Backend-Team. The Documentation Question – A Practical Concern

He then asked me, “Haben Sie Fragen zu Ihren eigenen Erfahrungen mit KI im Entwicklungsprozess?” (Do you have any questions about your own experience with AI in the development process?). I confessed, “Ich bin besonders daran interessiert, wie die technischen Dokumentationen unterstützt werden könnten – könnte AI hier helfen, diese zu erstellen oder zu aktualisieren?” (I’m particularly interested in how technical documentation could be supported – could AI help create or update it?). He said they were exploring that specifically. He explained how AI could potentially generate draft documentation based on code comments, which is a smart idea. It’s a real challenge – making sure documentation stays up-to-date, and AI could be a huge help.

Learning German – One Step at a Time

I’m still struggling with some of the more complex grammar. I asked Markus, “Wie sagt man auf Deutsch ‘user interface’?” (How do you say “user interface” in German?), and he patiently explained it’s Benutzeroberfläche. It’s frustrating when you feel like you’re constantly making little mistakes, but I’m trying to embrace the challenge. I’m also trying to use German more and more in my daily life – ordering Brot und Wurst (bread and sausage) at the Imbiss (snack bar) and chatting with my neighbor, Frau Schmidt, about the weather – “Das Wetter ist heute schön, nicht wahr?” (The weather is nice today, isn’t it?).
