Professional/Senior (m/w/d) Java Backend-Entwickler

My Journey into the World of Check24 Java Development

From Lost in Translation to Building Applications – A Newcomer’s Story

Okay, so I’m currently studying Computer Science at the Humboldt University in Berlin, and let’s be honest, the whole ‘Java Backend Development’ thing seemed incredibly complicated at first. I’d been hearing about this job opening at Check24 – seriously, it was plastered everywhere – and the description sounded… intense. “Senior-Bereich,” “Microservices,” “DevOps”… it felt like a whole other language! I spent ages just reading the job listing on the website (Read More and I have to admit, I was a bit intimidated.

The First Conversation – A Slight Misunderstanding

I managed to get an interview, and the guy, Steven, was really friendly but spoke so quickly. He kept using words like “agile” and “Sprint” and honestly, I was just nodding and trying to look like I understood. I asked him, “Was ist ein ‘Sprint’?” and he just laughed and said, “It’s, you know… a timeframe!” I realised immediately afterwards that I needed to really nail down the basics. I started spending my evenings going through tutorials on Spring Boot and relational databases. I even tried to explain to my flatmate, Luke, who’s a graphic designer, what a RESTful API was. He just stared at me and said, “Äh… is that like a really fancy menu?” It highlighted how much I didn’t actually know.

Getting My Head Around the Concepts

The most challenging part, I found, was understanding the whole DevOps thing. I mean, it sounded like a secret code! I discovered that it was all about automating the process of building and deploying software – making sure everything runs smoothly. I started learning about CI/CD (Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment) and it slowly started to make sense. I realised that the job wasn’t just about writing Java code; it was about the entire process of getting that code into the hands of users. I even started looking at some online courses specifically on DevOps practices.

SQL Basics – It’s Not as Scary as It Sounds

They mentioned SQL queries – I’d heard about it in my university courses, but I hadn’t really used it much. Steven gave me a simple task: “Schreibe eine Abfrage, die alle Produkte aus der Datenbank auswählt.” I was a bit nervous, but I remembered the basic syntax and, after a few minutes, I managed to write a query that worked! It was a small victory, but a really important one. “Wie geht das?” he asked. “Ich glaube, das hat geklappt,” I replied, feeling a tiny bit smug.

Git and Version Control – A Game Changer

Then there was Git. Honestly, the whole version control system thing was mind-blowing at first. Steven explained that it allowed developers to track changes to the code, collaborate effectively, and revert to previous versions if something went wrong. He showed me how to commit and push my changes to the repository. It felt really empowering to know that I was part of a team that was using this tool to manage the codebase. “Verstanden!” I said, trying to sound confident.

Teamwork and Communication – Key to Success

What really struck me during the interview and in my early interactions with the team was the importance of communication. Everyone was really open and willing to help. One of the senior developers, Alice, patiently explained the architecture of the existing platform to me. “Es ist wichtig, dass wir uns gut verständigen,” she said, “sonst gehen wir in Sack und Drache.” (It’s important that we communicate well, otherwise we go in sack and drag.)

Moving Forward – The Challenge and the Opportunity

I’m still learning, of course. There’s so much to understand – microservices, cloud platforms like AWS… it’s overwhelming at times. But I’m excited about the challenge. The job description mentions “innovative projects,” and that’s exactly what I’m looking for. I feel like this role at Check24 could be a fantastic opportunity to grow my skills, contribute to something meaningful, and really build a career in software development. And, you know, maybe even master the word ‘Sprint’ without getting completely lost! I’m definitely going to keep exploring those resources on the Check24 website: Read More – it’s a great starting point. “Viel Glück!” (Good luck!) to me, I suppose.
