JLPT N4: Mastering Restaurant Conversations
The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) N4 focuses on basic conversational skills. One of the most practical areas to practice is ordering and navigating a restaurant experience. This article will equip you with essential phrases and strategies for making requests, dealing with problems, and generally feeling comfortable in a Japanese eatery.
Entering the Restaurant & Initial Greetings
The first impression matters! Here are some useful phrases:
- 入ります (Erimasu) – “I’ll enter.” (Used when entering a restaurant.)
- いらっしゃいませ (Irasshaimesu) – “Welcome!” (Said by the staff upon your arrival. Respond with a polite acknowledgement)
- すみません (Sumimasen) – “Excuse me,” also used for general politeness and to get someone’s attention.
Example:
You walk into a restaurant. The staff say いらっしゃいませ. You reply with a smile: はい、すみません (Hai, sumimasen) – “Yes, excuse me.”
Making Your Order – Asking for Recommendations & Describing Items
Knowing how to order is key! Here’s how to ask for recommendations and describe what you want:
- おすすめは? (Osusume wa?) – “What do you recommend?”
- ~をください (~o kudasai) – “Please give me ~.” (e.g., Ramen o kudasai – Please give me ramen.)
- ~はありますか? (~wa arimasu ka?) – “Do you have ~?”
- ~と~をください (~to ~o kudasai) – “Please give me ~ and ~.” (e.g., Miso o niguiri to kudasai – Please give me miso with nigirizushi.)
Common Menu Items:
- ラーメン (Ramen) – Ramen
- 寿司 (Sushi) – Sushi
- ご飯 (Gohan) – Rice
- お水 (O-mizu) – Water
Mistake Example: Saying Ramen o kudasai without specifying what kind of ramen you want. The staff might bring you spicy ramen if that’s all they have!
Handling Problems & Making Corrections
Things don’t always go perfectly! Here’s how to politely address issues:
- すみません (Sumimasen) – Used for both ‘excuse me’ and ‘I’m sorry.’
- これは違います (Kore wa chigaimasu) – “This is incorrect.”
- もう一度お願いします (Mou ichido onegaishimasu) – “Please say it again,” or “Could you repeat that?”
- ~を交換してください (~o koukan shite kudasai) – “Please exchange this for ~.”
Example Dialogue:
You receive the wrong order. You say:
You: すみません! これは焼き鳥じゃありません (Sumimasen! Kore wa yakitori ja arimasen) – “Excuse me! This is not grilled chicken.”
Staff: 申し訳ございません。すぐに交換いたします(Moushiwake gozaimasen. Suguni koukan itashimasu) – “We apologize for the inconvenience, we will exchange it immediately.”
Ending Your Meal & Payment
- お会計お願いします (Okaikei onegaishimasu) – “The bill, please.”
- 現金でお願いします (Genkin de onegaishimasu) – “Cash, please.”
- カードは使えますか? (Kādo wa tsukaemasu ka?) – “Can I use a card?”
Important Note: Japanese restaurants increasingly accept credit cards, but it’s always good to check beforehand.
Practice Makes Perfect!
The best way to improve is to practice these phrases. Look for opportunities to order food and interact with restaurant staff – even if you make mistakes, they will appreciate your effort!
