My Struggle with “Flexibilität” and German Business – And Why It’s Making Me Question IELTS
Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin, working as a freelance translator. I thought learning German would be… well, easier. Turns out, it’s way more complicated than just memorizing vocabulary. Especially when you start thinking about business and how companies operate. That’s what the IELTS Executive Writing task – “Organizations Should Prioritize Platform Standardization Over Local Business Flexibility” – made me really think about, and honestly, it’s tied up in my daily experience here.
The Argument: Standardisation vs. Local Needs
The prompt basically asks if big businesses should focus on using the same systems everywhere or letting local branches do things their own way. It felt abstract at first, but then I started noticing it everywhere. I’ve been having this argument, in a small way, with my client, Herr Schmidt, who runs a small sausage shop – eine kleine Wurstbude – in Prenzlauer Berg.
Herr Schmidt Wants ‘Flexibilität’
Herr Schmidt is brilliant at making his sausages, seriously delicious. But he stubbornly refuses to use any kind of online ordering system or even an email for most things. He insists on taking phone orders – “Bitte, einen Dreiburger, ohne Zwiebel!” – and manually keeping track of everything in a ledger. He says it’s because “that’s how it’s always been done” and he doesn’t want to change his business model.
“Ich brauche Flexibilität!” he told me the other day. “Die Kunden, sie wollen immer etwas Besonderes! Eine kleine Änderung, ein bisschen extra Senf… Das kann ich nicht mit einem Computer machen.” (I need flexibility! The customers always want something special! A little change, a bit of extra mustard… I can’t do that with a computer.)
From an IELTS perspective, this is perfect for illustrating the “standardisation” argument. Larger chains – think IKEA or even big supermarket groups – would benefit immensely from consistent systems. They could track sales data, manage inventory more efficiently, and offer tailored promotions based on aggregated customer information. It’s all about scalability.
My Experience with ‘Online-Bestellungen’ (Online Orders)
Contrast that with my own work experience. I use a specific translation platform called “Lokalys” – it’s incredibly standardised. It tracks revisions, assigns tasks to different translators, and allows the agency to manage projects seamlessly. It’s frustrating sometimes because it doesn’t always feel flexible enough for the client’s immediate needs. But for the agency, it’s absolutely essential for managing a large number of projects efficiently.
I tried suggesting Lokalys to Herr Schmidt once. He looked at me like I was crazy. “Warum sollte ich mich das komplizieren?” he asked, genuinely perplexed. (Why would I complicate things?) “Ich bin ein Wurst-Meister! Ich habe Erfahrung!” (I’m a sausage master! I have experience!) – and honestly, you could tell he thought I was trying to take away his traditional methods.
The Misunderstanding – And My Correction
The real problem isn’t that Herr Schmidt doesn’t need flexibility. It’s the assumption that ‘flexibility’ always means doing things exactly how they were before. I realised then, correcting myself internally, that true flexibility comes from having a solid base of information and processes, not from resisting change.
I explained to him, “Herr Schmidt, I understand you want to cater to individual tastes. But using an online system could actually help you track those preferences – maybe even identify trends! Then you could adjust your recipes slightly based on what’s popular.”
He still wasn’t convinced, but he at least considered it. He said something like, “Hmm… vielleicht… aber ich muss es zuerst ausprobieren!” (Hmmm… maybe… but I need to try it first!)
The IELTS Angle: Communication is Key
That’s the point, isn’t it? The IELTS Executive Writing task forces you to argue a position clearly and convincingly. It’s not just about using fancy business vocabulary; it’s about demonstrating your ability to understand complex situations – like Herr Schmidt’s resistance – and explain different viewpoints effectively.
To truly tackle this prompt, I need to be able to articulate why standardisation benefits organisations, providing concrete examples (like data analysis for marketing or efficient supply chains). But equally importantly, I need to show that I can recognize the value of local adaptations and understand why businesses might resist change. It’s about balancing these perspectives and presenting a coherent argument – not just throwing around business jargon.
Moving Forward – And My New German Phrase
I think I’m starting to get it. The key is communication – die Kommunikation. And for anyone else struggling with this prompt, especially when dealing with real-world examples like Herr Schmidt’s sausage shop, remember: embrace the tension between standardization and flexibility. You might even learn a useful German phrase along the way – “Das ist eine gute Frage!” (That’s a good question!) – because you definitely will be asking them.
