My First Weeks in Berlin: A Little Help, Please!
Okay, so here I am. Berlin. It’s… loud. And amazing. I arrived just a few weeks ago, and honestly, it’s been a total whirlwind of trying to figure everything out. I’m working as a freelance translator – mostly legal stuff – and it’s challenging, but I’m learning so much, even if I still make a lot of mistakes. This whole “new country” thing is a lot harder than I initially thought, but I’m trying to be positive and embrace the chaos.
First Encounters & Simple Conversations
It started with a simple “Hallo! Wie geht es dir heute?” (Hello! How are you today?) to a woman named Alice I met at my local bakery, “Café am Spätberg.” She was so friendly. “Hallo Alice! Mir geht’s gut, danke. Und dir? Mir geht es auch gut.” (Hello Alice! I’m fine, thank you. And you? I’m also fine). I quickly realised saying “Mir geht’s gut” wasn’t quite right – I need to work on my German pronunciation! She was telling me she was trying to eat better and move more. “Ich versuche, mich besser zu ernähren. Das ist toll!” (I’m trying to eat better. That’s great!). It’s a good reminder for me too; I’ve been surviving on takeaway mostly.
Getting Moving (and Warming Up!)
I’ve started going for jogs every day – “Ich gehe jeden Tag joggen.” (I go jogging every day) – which is a brilliant idea, really. But it’s cold! I keep getting myself all bundled up, and then I’m miserable. Alice told me, “Ja, das stimmt. Man muss sich langsam aufwärmen, bevor man anfängt.” (Yes, that’s true. You have to warm up slowly before you start). She’s got a point. I need to actually do the warm-up, not just think about it.
Little Habits & Daily Routine
And then there’s the showering. “Ich habe auch angefangen, mich jeden Tag zu duschen.” (I’ve also started showering every day). I used to only shower on the weekends! “Oh, wirklich? Das mache ich auch, um mich frisch zu fühlen.” (Oh, really? I do that too, to feel fresh). It’s a good habit, I think. I’m trying to establish a proper routine.
Hygiene – A German Priority?
I’ve also been told I should be washing my hands more often. “Du solltest dir auch regelmäßig die Hände waschen, um dich gesund zu halten.” (You should also wash your hands regularly to stay healthy). It’s definitely something I’m trying to incorporate, especially after visiting the “Markt” (market). I’m constantly reminding myself, “Das stimmt absolut.” (That’s absolutely true).
Motivation & Friendship
I think it’s really important to motivate each other, right? “Ich denke, wir sollten uns gegenseitig motivieren, gesund zu leben.” (I think we should motivate each other to live healthily). Gerne! Ich bin dabei.” (Yes, that’s a good idea! Let’s try it! Gladly! I’m in). It’s actually really nice – it’s starting to feel a little less overwhelming.
Next Steps – A Spreech-Date
“Super! Dann treffen wir uns nächste Woche zum Spazierengehen?” (Great! Then shall we meet next week for a walk?). “Perfekt! Ich freue mich drauf! Ich auch!” (Perfect! I’m looking forward to it! Me too!). I’m already excited. This whole “learning German” thing feels a little less daunting now, thanks to people like Alice.
I’m still making mistakes, I’m sure, but I’m starting to build a little bit of confidence. “Deutsch lernen ist schwer, aber es lohnt sich!” (Learning German is hard, but it’s worth it!). Next up: learning how to order a coffee properly – mit Milch, bitte! (with milk, please!).
