Food delivery apps like Lieferando and Uber Eats – Grammar: Reflexive constructions

My First Lieferando Adventure: A Berlin Beginner’s Guide

Okay, so moving to Berlin has been… intense. It’s amazing, full of cool people and things to do, but navigating everyday life can be a total headache. Especially when you’re hungry! I’m Liam, by the way, and I’ve been here for about six months as a freelance graphic designer. I’m still figuring things out, and let’s just say my cooking skills are… developing.

The Hunger Strikes

Yesterday, I was staring into my fridge, feeling completely overwhelmed. I had a massive craving, but the thought of chopping vegetables and actually cooking felt like a monumental task. It’s funny, because back home, I was a pretty decent cook. Here? It’s different. I just wanted to eat.

Then, it happened. I was talking to Alice, a colleague I met at the co-working space, and she asked, “Hallo! Hast du schon Lieferando benutzt?” (Hello! Have you ever used Lieferando?)

Lieferando – My Savior (and a Pizza Addiction)

I hadn’t really looked into it. Lieferando is the big food delivery app here, right? I opened it on my phone, and wow, there were so many options. Burgers, pizza, noodles, everything. It was seriously overwhelming.

“Echt? Was ist denn los?” (Really? What’s wrong?) she asked, pointing at my phone. “Ich überlege, was ich essen soll, aber ich habe keine Lust, kochen zu müssen.” (I’m thinking about what I should eat, but I don’t want to have to cook.)

I told her something similar. “Ich habe Hunger, aber ich will nicht in der Küche stehen.” (I’m hungry, but I don’t want to stand in the kitchen.)

Making the Decision (and the Order!)

The conversation quickly turned to indecision. “Ich frage mich, ob ich mich selbst verwöhnen sollte.” (I’m wondering if I should treat myself). Alice suggested she’d ordered a Curry-Pizza the day before – “super lecker!” – and that maybe I should try ordering too.

“Gute Idee!” (Good idea!) I replied. “Aber du musst dich ja selbst entscheiden, was du willst, oder?” (But you have to decide yourself what you want, right?) I was debating whether to get ice cream for dessert or something for the main course. It felt like a huge choice! “Das ist eine gute Frage!” (That’s a good question!)

The Art of Saying “Yes” (to Yourself)

Alice then said something that really struck me. “Vielleicht bestellst du einfach was, was du dir selbst gönnen würdest, ohne dich zu fragen!” (Maybe you should just order something you’d really want, without even asking yourself!) She was right, of course. It was so much easier to just choose. I realized I was overthinking it.

I finally decided – a pizza would be perfect. I put in my order, and honestly, it arrived in about thirty minutes. It was delicious!

Learning the Language (and the Ordering Process)

This whole experience highlighted a few things. Firstly, ordering food in Berlin is incredibly easy – and it’s a huge part of the culture! Secondly, I need to learn more German phrases related to food. I kept stumbling over “Ich möchte…” (I would like…) – it feels so formal! I need to get more comfortable just saying what I want.

It also made me realize how much I miss having a good, familiar meal. I’m still learning to navigate the Berlin food scene, but tonight, thanks to Lieferando and a shared conversation, I had a pretty great pizza.

Useful German Phrases from the Conversation:

  • Hallo! (Hello!)
  • Hast du schon…? (Have you already…?)
  • Was ist denn los? (What’s wrong/What’s up?)
  • Ich habe Hunger. (I’m hungry.)
  • Ich will nicht… (I don’t want to…)
  • Ich möchte… (I would like…) – Use this sparingly, it’s quite formal!
  • Super lecker! (Super delicious!)
  • Echt? (Really?)
  • Gute Idee! (Good idea!)
