My First Steps into Fitness in Berlin
Learning German and Finding My Routine
Okay, so, it’s been about six months since I moved to Berlin. It’s amazing, seriously, but it’s also…a lot. The language, the culture, everything is so different. I’m working as a junior designer at a small agency, which is great, but the evenings are mine. And lately, I’ve been trying to actually do something with my evenings beyond just staring at my laptop. That’s how I ended up talking to a guy named Markus at the coffee shop down the street – we started with “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir heute?” and it just spiraled from there.
Markus was telling me about his fitness routine, and honestly, it was a little intimidating at first. He was talking about going to the gym twice a week, swimming three times, and doing yoga. “Mir geht’s gut, danke! Und dir?” he asked, and I quickly replied, “Mir geht’s auch gut. Ich versuche, öfter Sport zu machen. Das ist toll!” He was really enthusiastic, and I started to feel a bit self-conscious about my lack of exercise.
The Conversation About Sport
He explained he goes to the Fitnessstudio normally twice a week, sometimes he goes jogging too. “Ich gehe normalerweise zweimal die Woche ins Fitnessstudio, aber manchmal auch joggen.” He said he also swims three times a week, and he does yoga sometimes. “Ich gehe meistens drei Mal pro Woche ins Schwimmbad, und an manchen Tagen mache ich Yoga.” I said, “Yoga klingt gut! Ich habe schon oft überlegt, das auszuprobieren, aber ich habe nie den Durchstart gemacht.” He encouraged me, “Das solltest du wirklich mal machen! Es ist ganz entspannend und hilft auch beim Muskelaufbau.” I know, I know, it sounds a bit cliché, but it actually sounded appealing.
He talked about how he has to build up slowly because he’s only been doing it regularly for a short time. “Ich habe vor, mich langsam steigern zu müssen, denn ich mache jetzt erst seit Kurzem regelmäßig Sport. Das ist eine gute Idee! Wenn ich es nicht langsam angehe, werde ich mich wahrscheinlich überanstrengen.” I totally get that. I’ve definitely overdone things in the past when I’m trying to get motivated. It’s all about listening to your body, right?
Warm-Ups and Routines
Then he started explaining how he warms up before going to the gym. “Ich versuche, mich vor dem Training richtig aufzuwärmen, um Verletzungen vorzubeugen.” He said he does some stretching and cardio exercises. “Ich mache immer ein paar Dehnübungen und ein paar Cardio-Übungen, bevor ich ins Fitnessstudio gehe.” I asked, “Wie machst du das?” He showed me a few simple stretches – you know, like reaching for the sky and touching your toes. It seemed pretty easy! “Das ist gut.”
It made me realize I was always skipping the warm-up. I’d just jump straight into the weights, which is probably a really bad idea. I’m learning so much just by talking to people like Markus. “Es ist wichtig, dass man es regelmäßig macht, oder?” he confirmed, and I agreed enthusiastically. “Absolut!”
Making a Plan – and a Suggestion
He mentioned that he tries to go to the gym every Sunday. “Ich versuche, jeden Sonntag ins Fitnessstudio zu gehen. Das ist super!” I thought about that too. I need to actually schedule something for the weekend. I said, “Ich muss auch versuchen, meinen Sonntag für Sport zu nutzen.”
Then, he suggested something really cool. “Vielleicht könnten wir uns ja mal zusammen treiben? Das wäre toll!” I was instantly excited. It would be a great way to hold myself accountable and maybe even learn some more German along the way. I’m still pretty terrible at conversation, and having a friendly face to talk to would be really helpful.
A Little German Vocabulary
Here are a few phrases I picked up from the conversation:
- Hallo! Wie geht’s dir heute? – Hello! How are you today?
- Mir geht’s gut, danke! – I’m fine, thank you!
- Und dir? – And you?
- Ich versuche, öfter Sport zu machen. – I’m trying to exercise more often.
- Der Durchstart – The “kickstart” – starting something new.
- Überanstrengen – To overexert yourself.
- Aufwärmen – To warm up.
- Dehnübungen – Stretching exercises
- Cardio-Übungen – Cardio exercises
I’m still early in my fitness journey, but thanks to a chance conversation with Markus, I’m feeling a bit more motivated. Now, I just need to actually do it! Maybe tomorrow… I need to learn more about the local gyms – there are so many options in Berlin! I’m going to start researching and hopefully, I’ll see Markus at the gym soon. “Stimmt!” (That’s right!)
