My First Echo Show 5: A Berlin Student’s Adventure
Okay, so things are… well, they’re definitely settling in here in Berlin. It’s amazing, chaotic, and sometimes utterly baffling, but I’m slowly getting my bearings. One of the things I’ve been trying to figure out is how to make my tiny apartment feel a bit more… me. And, let me tell you, I stumbled across something that might help – the new Echo Show 5.
The Conversation Started With a Question
It all started with a chat with Lena, my colleague from the marketing agency where I’m interning. She was like, “Hallo, hast du den neuen Echo Show 5 schon gesehen? Ja, klar! Ich habe ihn gestern bestellt. Der sieht echt cool aus.” (Hello, have you seen the new Echo Show 5? Yeah, of course! I ordered it yesterday. It looks really cool.) I’d heard about them, of course – Alexa is everywhere here. But I hadn’t actually seen one in person.
Getting to Know Alexa (and the Questions)
I was curious, so I asked, “Wirklich? Was gefällt dir denn daran?” (Really? What do you like about it?) She explained how she uses it to control her music, “Stimmt, ich brauche Alexa auch total, um meine Musik zu steuern und die Wettervorhersage zu checken.” (That’s right, I really need Alexa to control my music and check the weather.) It sounded incredibly convenient, especially for someone like me who’s constantly losing track of time and trying to remember if I need an umbrella.
My Smart Home Dreams (and the Licht!)
Then she added, “Ich denke, ich brauche ihn auch für die Smart Home Steuerung, besonders für das Licht.” (I think I need it for smart home control, especially for the light.) Seriously? I was imagining controlling my lights with my voice – ‘Alexa, Licht an!’ – it’s a little bit of a student fantasy, right?
Finding the Link and a Little Confusion
She then rattled off the Amazon link: “Hast du die URL schon gefunden? Klar, hier: [Read More Danke, das ist hilfreich.” (Have you found the URL? Sure, here: […]) I stared at the link, trying to decipher it. German Amazon links are… intense! I finally managed to click it, and there it was – the Echo Show 5.
It’s a Good Deal, But Will It Work?
“Ich muss mal schauen, ob er zu meiner Einrichtung passt.” (I need to see if it fits in my setup.) That’s a huge worry for me. My apartment is small. I’m constantly moving furniture. But, she reassured me, “Kein Problem, du kannst ihn ja immer noch zurückgeben, wenn er nicht deinen Wünschen entspricht.” (No problem, you can still return it if it doesn’t meet your wishes.)
A Little Bit of Hope…
“Aber ich glaube, ich werde ihn lieben! Ich bin gespannt!” (But I think I’m going to love it! I’m excited!) she exclaimed. I have to admit, I felt a little bit of that excitement too. It does look pretty cool.
Next Steps – Testing and Integration
“Vielleicht sehen wir uns bald damit und können das Gerät testen. Gerne!” (Maybe we can see it together and test the device. Gladly!) she offered. Honestly, I’d love that. I need to figure out how to integrate it with my Spotify account – “Alexa, spiele meine Lieblings-Indie-Musik!” (Alexa, play my favorite indie music!).
Learning German Phrases for the Future
Here are a few phrases I picked up from the conversation that I think will be really useful:
- “Hallo, hast du…?” – Hello, have you…?
- “Ich habe bestellt” – I’ve ordered
- “Der sieht echt cool aus” – It looks really cool.
- “Alexa, [command]” – Alexa, [command] (e.g., Alexa, Licht an! – Alexa, turn on the light!)
- “Ich brauche ihn für…” – I need it for…
I’m going to order it today, and I’m really looking forward to seeing how it fits into my life here in Berlin. It’s going to be an adventure, that’s for sure! Bis bald! (See you soon!)
