Echo Show 5 (Newest gen) I Compact smart touchscreen with Alexa for smart home control and more I Cloud Blue

My First Encounter with the Echo Show 5: A Berlin Student’s Thoughts

Okay, so this is a little weird, writing about a conversation I had, but I really wanted to share my thoughts on this new Echo Show 5. It all started with a friend, Lena, mentioning it and suddenly I was deep down the Amazon rabbit hole. Honestly, I’m still learning German, and sometimes it feels like a whole other world of possibilities – and potential confusion!

The Conversation Begins

Lena was like, “Hallo! Hast du den neuen Echo Show 5 schon gesehen? Ja, ich habe gerade die Seite auf Amazon angesehen. Sieht echt cool aus. Wirklich? Was gefällt dir denn so?” – basically, “Hey! Have you seen the new Echo Show 5? Yeah, I just looked at the page on Amazon. It looks really cool. Really? What do you like about it?”

I was a little overwhelmed, but I managed to respond, “Ich finde die Größe super praktisch und Alexa klingt ja total intuitiv. Stimmt, die kompakte Größe ist gut, und ich brauche Alexa auch im Bad.” – “I think the size is really practical and Alexa sounds totally intuitive. You’re right, the compact size is good, and I need Alexa in the bathroom too.” My apartment is tiny, so space is a real issue!

Kitchen Gadgets and Smart Home Dreams

Then it got even more interesting. We started talking about using it in the kitchen. “Ich überlege, ob ich ihn mir für die Küche holen soll, um Rezepte zu schauen und die Einkaufsliste zu verwalten. Das wäre eine tolle Idee!” – “I’m thinking about getting it for the kitchen to look at recipes and manage the shopping list. That would be a great idea!” I’m a terrible cook, but I desperately want to be better. And I always forget what I need at the supermarket.

Lena suggested, “Und du könntest die Smart Home Geräte steuern. Genau! Ich habe schon überlegt, ob ich ihn mit meinen Lampen verbinden soll. Das klingt super!” – “And you could control smart home devices. Exactly! I’ve been wondering if I should connect it with my lamps. That sounds super!” I envision a future where I just say “Alexa, mach das Licht aus!” (Alexa, turn off the light!) – though I’m pretty sure that’s a little ambitious for now.

Checking the URL and the Reviews

Of course, the next thing she did was link the page: “Hast du die URL schon geschaut? Read More – “Have you looked at the URL?”

I clicked it, and honestly, the pictures are really appealing. Plus, the reviews are mostly positive. “Ja, habe ich. Die Bewertungen sind ja größtenteils positiv. Ich denke, wir sollten ihn uns mal bestellen!” – “Yeah, I have. The reviews are mostly positive. I think we should order one!”

My Hesitations (and Excitement!)

I wasn’t completely convinced, but I have to admit, I’m starting to get excited. It seems like a really useful thing to have, especially for someone like me who’s constantly getting lost in German instructions and trying to decipher German recipes.

I have a little concern though. I don’t want to overspend, I need to remember to ask myself, “Ist das wirklich notwendig?” (Is this really necessary?)

Learning Some Useful Phrases

Here are a few phrases I’ve picked up from this conversation that I’m going to try to use:

  • “Alexa, schalte das Licht ein!” (Alexa, turn on the light!) – A classic!
  • “Wie viel kostet das?” (How much does that cost?) – Always good to know!
  • “Ich verstehe das nicht.” (I don’t understand that.) – For those moments when German just completely disappears.

I’m still getting used to navigating the German tech world, but this Echo Show 5 seems like a good first step. Wish me luck! And, if you have any tips for a newbie, please let me know!
