My First Berlin Stress Session: Learning German and Feeling Overwhelmed
It’s Hard, Right?
Okay, so let me tell you, moving to Berlin was amazing. Seriously, the history, the culture, the street art… it’s incredible. But let me be honest, it’s also incredibly overwhelming. I’m studying media production at Universität der Künste (UdK), which is fantastic, but the workload is insane. And learning German, well, that’s a whole other challenge. I was chatting with Luke and Alice the other day, and it kind of hit me – I’m stressed. Like, really stressed.
“Mir geht’s okay, aber ich bin ziemlich gestresst im Moment.”
As you might have heard from the dialogue, Luke and Alice were talking about feeling stressed. It’s so relatable, right? (I’m okay, but I’m pretty stressed at the moment). I immediately understood what he meant, and it immediately made me feel less alone. Was stresst dich denn genau?” (Oh no, I’m sorry to hear that! What stresses you out exactly?).
Work, Projects, and Late Nights
So, what’s stressing me out? Honestly, pretty much everything. My internship at this digital marketing agency is demanding. They’re constantly throwing new projects at me, and I’m expected to be working late into the night. It’s exhausting. “Die Arbeit ist sehr anstrengend, und es gibt ständig neue Projekte” (The work is very tiring, and there are constantly new projects). I completely get it; I’ve been there. I’ve started falling into the trap of always trying to do more and more.
The Sleep Problem
And that’s the problem, isn’t it? Because I’m working late, I’m not getting enough sleep. And when I don’t sleep enough, I feel worse. “Weil ich dann so wenig Schlaf bekomme, fühle ich mich dann noch schlechter.” (Because I then get so little sleep, I feel even worse). It’s this awful cycle! I feel like I have no time for myself, and it feels like work is controlling my entire life.
Useful German Phrases I’ve Picked Up
Let me share some of the phrases I’ve actually used and found really helpful:
- “Es ist so, als ob die Arbeit mein Leben bestimmt” (It’s as if work determines my life). This one really hit home.
- “Das kann ich verstehen” (I can understand). – I’ve used this a lot when I’m struggling to explain something.
I feel like I have no time for myself). – Super accurate!
Advice and a Plan (or Trying To Make One)
Alice offered some good advice. (Exactly that’s the problem! I feel like I have no time for my friends and myself). She suggested planning breaks and coming home earlier. “Ich versuche jetzt, mehr Pausen einzuplanen und früher nach Hause zu kommen” (I’m trying to plan more breaks and come home earlier). It’s a good idea, but it’s proving really difficult. I’m worried about missing something, you know? “Weil ich sonst Angst habe, etwas zu verpassen.” (Because I’m then afraid of missing something).
More Realistic Suggestions – And More German!
Luke suggested trying to make time for myself, maybe even a weekend. “Vielleicht sollte ich mal versuchen, ein paar Stunden am Wochenende für mich selbst zu reservieren” (Maybe I should try to reserve a few hours on the weekend for myself). Or perhaps doing some sport, or finding a hobby – “vielleicht hilft es ja auch, etwas Sport zu machen oder einen Hobby zu finden, um den Kopf freizubekommen” (maybe that would help too, to do some sport or find a hobby to free my mind). That’s a really good point; I need a way to de-stress. “Das ist wichtig, weil man sonst einfach nur immer weiterarbeitet” (That’s important because otherwise you just keep working and working).
What Now?
I agree – it’s time for a change. Maybe I should seriously consider trying to set aside a few hours on the weekend for myself. “Das wäre eine gute Lösung, wenn es so funktioniert.” (That would be a good solution if it works like that). We should probably set up a time to talk and come up with a plan together, “vielleicht sollten wir uns mal zusammensetzen und einen Plan machen, wie wir besser mit dem Stress umgehen können” (maybe we should sit together and make a plan on how we can better deal with stress).
Learning and Growing
It’s important to remember that learning German is a process, and there will be ups and downs. Just like dealing with stress. It’s also cool to chat with people like Luke and Alice. It helps to know I’m not the only one struggling! And honestly, every little bit of German I learn, every little conversation I have, feels like a small victory. “Es ist wichtig, dass wir auf uns achten und nicht ständig nur arbeiten” (It’s important that we take care of ourselves and don’t constantly just work).
