Discussing bicycles, e-bikes, and scooters – Grammar: Relative clauses with prepositions

My First Weekend in Berlin: Learning German, One Conversation at a Time

Okay, so this is completely surreal. I’ve been in Berlin for three months now, working as a freelance translator – mostly technical manuals, which is…interesting. But the biggest hurdle, honestly, hasn’t been the language itself, but actually using it. I’m a really shy person, and the thought of just jumping into a conversation with a native German speaker was terrifying. But my colleague, Alice, she’s been amazing. She’s really helped me get comfortable, and this weekend, I had a really nice chat with her friend, Alice.

The “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir?” Moment

It all started with that classic greeting: “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir? Hallo Alice! Mir geht’s gut, danke. Und dir? Mir geht’s auch gut, danke.” I was feeling a bit awkward, just standing there, but Alice was so friendly. It felt a little staged at first, like something out of a textbook, but it quickly became natural. “Mir geht’s auch gut, danke.” – That actually felt really good to say. I was genuinely thankful that my German was at least understandable.

Planning the Weekend – And the Questions That Came With It

Then she asked, “Hast du eigentlich Pläne für das Wochenende?” – “Do you actually have plans for the weekend?” Of course, I was rambling about wanting to cycle, maybe to the See (lake). She said, “Fahrrad? Das ist doch super!” – “Bicycle? That’s great!” Which was encouraging.

Then she started talking about e-bikes and e-scooters, and my brain just went completely blank. “Ich habe auch überlegt, mir eine E-Bike zuzulegen.” – “I’ve also been considering buying an e-bike.” She said, “Die sind doch viel einfacher, oder?” – “They’re much easier, aren’t they?” And I almost nodded along, but I didn’t really get it.

The E-Bike Dilemma (And My Hesitations)

I told her, “Ich finde E-Bikes auch toll, aber ich weiß nicht, ob ich das wirklich brauche.” – “I also find e-bikes great, but I don’t know if I really need it.” I confessed that I mostly just cycle short distances. She agreed, “Ja, das stimmt. Aber wenn du längere Strecken fahren willst, ist ein E-Bike wirklich praktisch.” – “Yes, that’s true. But if you want to cycle longer distances, an e-bike is really practical.”

It started to make sense, but then she threw in the e-scooter idea, “Man könnte auch eine E-Scooter in Betracht ziehen, oder?” – “You could also consider an e-scooter, or?”

The Noise Factor & My Preference for Quiet

I quickly said, “Ein E-Scooter? Das ist vielleicht etwas zu laut für mich. Ich bevorzuge die Ruhe des Fahrrads.” – “An e-scooter? That might be a little too loud for me. I prefer the quiet of the bicycle.” It’s honestly a little embarrassing to admit, but I really do value peace and quiet. I’m used to the relative calm of the UK, and the thought of zipping around on a noisy scooter…not so great.

Overwhelmed by Choice

– “E-scooters are really cool, but I think there are so many different models, there’s a huge selection.” And she was right! I realized I was completely overwhelmed. “Stimmt. Vielleicht sollte ich mich erstmal informieren, welche Art von Fahrrad für mich am besten ist.” – “That’s right. Maybe I should first find out which type of bike is best for me.”

Hearing About Electronic Brakes

Then she mentioned something I’d actually heard about: “Ich habe gehört, dass es neue Modelle mit elektronischen Bremsen gibt. Das klingt gut! Die wären sicher eine Verbesserung.” – “I heard there are new models with electronic brakes. That sounds good! They would definitely be an improvement.” I’m definitely interested in that, because I’m a bit of a nervous cyclist, and electronic brakes sound much safer.

Making a Decision (For Now)

I said to myself (and to Alice), “Ich denke, ich werde mich wegen dem E-Bike weiter informieren. Das finde ich gut.” – “I think I will continue to research the e-bike. I find that good.” It felt good to actually make a decision, even if it was just to do more research.

The Importance of Research

– “I think it’s important to research well before you make a large purchase.” She’s spot on! It’s easy to get swept up in excitement and buy something you’ll regret.

A Future Ride?

And then she said, “Genau! Und vielleicht fahren wir ja bald zusammen eine Runde. Sehr gerne!” – “Exactly! And maybe we’ll ride together sometime soon. Very gladly!” That would be amazing. I really need to keep practicing my German and pushing myself to have more conversations.

It was just a simple chat, but it felt like a huge step forward. Maybe I’ll actually buy an e-bike, maybe I won’t. But at least I’m learning, one “Hallo!” at a time. Now, I need to go find Alice… I think I owe her a coffee.
