My New Reading Habit – And a Kindle in Berlin

Hallo Alice! A New Tech Adventure

Okay, so this is a bit weird, but I’m trying to build up a habit of reading more. Honestly, I haven’t really done it properly since…well, since I moved here. I spend so much time at work, navigating the U-Bahn, just generally being in Berlin, that I’ve fallen behind. I need something that’s easy, comfortable, and doesn’t take up too much space. That’s when I saw it – the Amazon Kindle Paperwhite. Have you heard of it?

Alice’s Recommendation – And a Link!

Oh yeah! I just looked at the page you sent me. It looks really good with the screen! The 7 Zoll and the glare-free screen sound brilliant, especially if I want to read outside. I really like that. And the battery lasts weeks! And the fact that it has ads is…well, it’s a bit annoying, isn’t it? But all the other features are still pretty cool. You know, the speed of it and the screen are important.

Storage and a Good Deal – 16GB?

Have you thought about getting it with 16GB of storage? I’m considering it. I read a lot of books. I need enough space! It’s a bit like trying to find a decent apartment in this city – space is precious! What do you think about us checking to see if there’s a good deal going on?

German Conversation Snippets – Just Getting Used To It

I was talking to my colleague, Markus, the other day and asked him “Hast du einen Kindle?” (Do you have a Kindle?) He looked at me like I was crazy! He said, “Warum sollte ich? Ich lese noch lieber ein echtes Buch!” (Why would I? I prefer a real book!) It’s funny, though. Everyone here seems to have a tablet or some kind of gadget.

I also tried to order a coffee this morning and asked the barista “Ich brauche einen Kaffee, bitte.” (I need a coffee, please.) She asked me “Mit Milch?” (With milk?) I said “Ja, mit Milch, bitte!” (Yes, with milk, please!) and she smiled. Little victories, you know?

Dealing with Differences – The Ads!

The biggest thing that threw me off was that it comes with ads. It’s different from how things are done back home. I’m used to paying for subscriptions or buying books directly. It’s a little jarring, but I guess you get what you pay for. I thought, “Ach, das ist ja komisch!” (Oh, that’s strange!).

Looking for a Deal – What’s Out There?

You said you’d take a look and see what deals are available. That’s brilliant! I’m going to check Amazon and maybe even browse a few electronics stores. I need to compare prices and read some reviews – “Rezensionen lesen” (read reviews) is something I’m slowly getting the hang of. I want to make sure I’m getting the best price. I’m hoping to find something like “ein Schnäppchen” (a bargain!).

Reading in Berlin – A New Routine?

Honestly, I’m trying to create a little bit of downtime for myself. Just sitting in Tiergarten, reading a book – it’s a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the city. I’m slowly getting used to the German pace of things, and reading is a good way to do that. I can already imagine myself reading in a café on a rainy afternoon – “ein gemütlicher Kaffee” (a cozy coffee).
