😂 One Tiny German Word, One Very Awkward Meeting 2

😂 One Tiny German Word, One
Very Awkward Meeting 2

I once wanted to say something incredibly simple in German: “I’m
in favor of it.”

So I confidently said:

„Ich bin davon.“

That was not the sentence I thought it was.

What I needed was „Ich bin dafür.“ And that tiny
mistake sent me straight into one of my favorite German rabbit holes:
dafür, davon, dabei, daran, dazu, da, dran.

👍 Ich bin dafür.

When I support an idea, I can say:

„Sollen wir das Team-Event auf Donnerstag verschieben?“
„Ja,
ich bin dafür.“

Here, dafür sein means to be in favor of
something
.

🙋 Ich bin dabei.

But supporting the idea and actually joining are not quite the same
thing.

„Kommst du am Donnerstag mit?“
„Ja, ich bin
dabei.“

For me, dabei sein is the useful “I’m in / I’m joining”
expression.

👉 Ich bin dran.

Then somebody asks whose turn it is.

„Wer ist als Nächstes?“
„Ich bin dran.“

Now I’m not supporting anything and I’m not joining anything. It’s
simply my turn.

📍 Ich bin da.

„Bist du schon im Büro?“
„Ja, ich bin da.“

This one is mercifully straightforward: I’m here / I’m there /
I’ve arrived.

😵‍💫 And Then “davon” Comes Back

Just when I think I’ve learned that „Ich bin davon“ is
not what I want, German gives me this:

„Was hältst du davon?“

And suddenly davon is perfectly correct.

„Was hältst du davon, das Meeting abzusagen?“
→ “What do you think about cancelling the meeting?”

I can even answer:

„Ich halte viel davon.“
→ “I think highly of that idea / I’m quite in favor of it.”

At that point my internal German learner is asking: Was wollt ihr
eigentlich von mir?

🧠 The Difference I Try to Remember

Ich bin
dafür.
I support
it.
Ich bin
dabei.
I’m joining /
I’m in.
Ich bin
dran.
It’s my
turn.
Ich bin
da.
I’m here /
there.
Was hältst du davon? What do you think of
that?

😂 My Survival Sentence

If I ever manage to use all of them correctly in one meeting, I’m
celebrating:

„Ich bin dafür. Ich bin am Donnerstag dabei. Wenn ich mit der
Präsentation dran bin, bin ich hoffentlich auch geistig da.“

And if I accidentally say davon again?

I’ll just claim I was testing everyone’s German.
