☕ The Coffee Machine Is Judging My German

☕ The
Coffee Machine Is Judging My German

I thought working as a barista
would make ordering coffee in German easy. Then the coffee machine stopped
working during the morning rush.

Suddenly I needed more than
„Ein Kaffee, bitte.“ I needed sentences like „Die
Kaffeemaschine funktioniert nicht.“
, „Der Wassertank ist
leer.“
, and „Ich mache die Maschine sauber.“

The useful beginner lesson is that workplace German often starts with
very small sentences: what is broken, what is empty, what I need, and what
I am doing.

My favorite survival sentence became „Einen
Moment, bitte. Die Kaffeemaschine funktioniert gerade nicht.“

It sounds much more professional than staring at the machine and
whispering, “Please. We have customers.”

By the end of the shift, I
had learned German vocabulary, basic customer-service phrases, and one
universal truth: the coffee machine always chooses the busiest moment to
develop a personality.
