Learn Spanish: Introduce Yourself (A1 Level)

Learn Spanish: Introduce Yourself – A1 Writing

Hola! Want to start speaking Spanish? One of the best ways for beginners is to write a short introduction about yourself. This exercise focuses on basic phrases and vocabulary you’ll use daily. We’re aiming for realistic, conversational Spanish, not perfect grammar. Don’t worry about mistakes – they are part of learning!

Why Write an Introduction?

Introducing yourself is a super common activity in any language. It’s how you start conversations, make friends, and connect with people. In Spanish, it’s just as important. This exercise builds confidence by getting you comfortable using basic phrases.

Spanish Phrases You Need to Know

  • Hola – Hello
  • Me llamo… – My name is…
  • Soy – I am (used for describing yourself)
  • Tengo… años – I am … years old.
  • Vivo en… – I live in…
  • Quiero… – I like… / I want to…
  • ¿Cómo estás? – How are you? (informal)
  • Bien, gracias – Good, thank you.

Example Introductions (with corrections!)

Here are a few examples of introductions at this level. Note the mistakes and how they’re corrected:

Example 1 (Correct):

Hola, me llamo Ana. Soy estudiante y tengo veinte años. Vivo en Madrid y quiero aprender español. ¿Cómo estás? Bien, gracias.

(Translation: Hello, my name is Ana. I am a student and I am twenty years old. I live in Madrid and I want to learn Spanish. How are you? Good, thank you.)

Example 2 (Incorrect – with correction):

Hola, soy Ana y tengo veinte años. Yo vivo en la España.

(Translation: Hello, I am Ana and I am twenty years old. I live in Spain.)

Correction: Hola, soy Ana y tengo veinte años. Vivo en España. (Hello, my name is Ana and I am twenty years old. I live in Spain.) “La España” isn’t correct; you use “España.”

Example 3 (Correct):

Hola! Me llamo Juan. Soy profesor y tengo treinta y cinco años. Vivo en Barcelona con mi familia. Quiero viajar al mundo! ¿Cómo estás? Estoy bien, gracias.

(Translation: Hello! My name is Juan. I am a teacher and I am thirty-five years old. I live in Barcelona with my family. I want to travel the world! How are you? I’m good, thank you.)

Writing Your Own Introduction

  1. Start with “Hola” – Always a good start!
  2. Say your name: Use “Me llamo…” (My name is…) followed by your name.
  3. Describe yourself briefly: Use “Soy” + what you are (e.g., estudiante – student, profesor – teacher).
  4. Give your age: “Tengo…” (I have…) + the number of years.
  5. Where do you live? “Vivo en…” (I live in…).
  6. Add a small detail about yourself or what you like to do: “Quiero…”(I want to) – or describe something you enjoy.
  7. Finish with a question! “¿Cómo estás?” (How are you?) – A friendly way to start a conversation.

Tips for Beginners

  • Keep it short and simple. Don’t try to write a novel! A few sentences are perfect at this stage.
  • Don’t be afraid to make mistakes! Everyone makes them when learning a new language. Focus on getting your message across.
  • Use online translation tools sparingly – they can help you understand words, but don’t rely on them completely.
  • Practice saying the phrases out loud! This will help you get comfortable with pronunciation.

¡Buena suerte! (Good luck!)
