- 지하철 (jihacheol) – Subway/Underground
- 역 (yeok) – Station
- 정류장 (jeongnyujang) – Bus stop

Asking for Directions
1. Asking Where Something Is
You’ll often need to ask where a specific location is.
Korean: [이] 곳은 어디예요? ([i] go-eun eodiyeyo?)
Translation: Where is this?
Explanation: This is a super common and useful phrase. ‘이 (i)’ means “this.” ‘곳 (got) ’ refers to a place. ‘어디예요? (eodiyeyo?)’ is the polite way of asking “Where is it?”
Example Situation: You’re at a bus stop looking for a cafe.
“저기! [이] 곳은 어디예요?
(Jeogi! [i] go-eun eodiyeyo?)” – “Over there! Where is this?”
2. Requesting Directions to a Place
Let’s say you want to get to the subway station.
Korean: 지하철역까지 어떻게 가요? (jihacheol-yeokkkaji eotteoke gayo?)
Translation: How do I get to the subway station?
Explanation: ‘지하철역 (jihacheol-yeok)’ is “subway station.” ‘까지 (kkaji)’ means “to.” ‘어떻게 (eotteoke)’ means “how” and ‘가요? (gayo?)’ is the polite form of asking “go?”
Using Public Transportation
1. Buying a Ticket
Korean: 이것은 얼마예요? (igeoseun eolmayeyo?)
Translation: How much is this?
Common Mistake: Saying “얼마예요?” (eolmayeyo?) directly can sound a little abrupt. Adding “이것은” (igeoseun – ‘this’) makes it more polite.
2. Indicating Your Destination
Korean: [장소]까지 가 주세요. ([jangso]kkaji ga juseyo.)
Translation: Please take me to [place].
‘[장소]’ (jangso) means ‘location’. This is crucial for telling the driver where you want to go.
Taxi Conversations
Korean: 택시 한 대 불러 주세요. (taeksi han dae bulyeo juseyo.)
Translation: Please call a taxi.
‘한 대’ (han dae) means “one” – the standard way to ask for a taxi.
Practice Phrases
- 기다리세요. (gidariseyo.) – Wait here.
- 가까워요? (gakkawoyo?) – Is it nearby?
- 저기요! (jeogiyo!) – Excuse me / Hey! (Use to get someone’s attention)
Remember, consistent practice is key. Start with these phrases and build your confidence in real-life situations!
