Let’s start with some crucial phrases:

(Konnichiwa) – Hello / Good afternoon
(Konbanwa) – Good evening
(Sensei) – Teacher
(Gakkou) – School
(Tomodachi) – Friend
(Benkyou) – Study

(Onegaishimasu) – Please
Scenario 1: Meeting a Friend Before Class
You and a friend, Kenji, meet before class.
– Hello, Kenji!
(Konnichiwa!) – Hello!
(Shukudai wa shimashita ka?) – Did you do your homework?
(Ee, shimashita.) – Yes, I did.
– What was difficult?
(Sukaiku desu) – It was math.
(Ganbatte!) – Good luck! / Do your best!
– Thank you!
Note: “~です” (desu) is a polite way to say something. (Ganbatte) encourages someone and is incredibly common.
Scenario 2: Asking for Help with Homework
You don’t understand your math homework, so you ask your teacher, Sensei Tanaka, for help.
(Sensei, sumimasen.) – Teacher, excuse me.
– What’s the problem?
(Kono mondai ga wakarimasen.) – I don’t understand this problem.
(Mou ichido setsumei shimasu) – I’ll explain it again.
Mistake Correction: Notice you didn’t say “I don’t know.” Using “wakarimasen” (don’t understand) is more natural and polite.
Scenario 3: Talking About Your School Life with a Friend
You talk to your friend, Hana, about school.
You: 学校は楽しいですか?(Gakkou wa tanoshii desu ka?) – Is school fun?
(Sou desu ne. Tomodachi to benkyou suru no ga tanoshii desu.) – That’s right. Studying with friends is fun.
(Watashi wa, eigo ga muzukashii desu.) – I find English difficult.
– Do your best!
