TELC B1.2 Writing: Express Your Opinion on AI-Created Art

My Struggle with German & This Weird Art Thing – TELC B1.2 Writing Practice

Okay, so here I am, almost a year in Berlin now, and honestly? Deutsch is still…a beast. I moved here for my job at the electronics company, KlausTech, and everything’s great professionally, but trying to really express myself – especially in writing – feels like climbing a mountain. And today’s task from my TELC course? Write about AI-generated art. Seriously! It feels a bit…futuristic and confusing.

The Task: Opinion Pieces in German

The tutor, Frau Schmidt, explained it was about forming an opinion and backing it up with reasons. Simple enough, oder? She said we need to be clear about what we think and use convincing language – “Ich bin der Meinung…” (I am of the opinion…) It felt a bit daunting at first, especially because I wasn’t really sure how people here felt about this “AI Art.”

My First Attempts – A Hilarious Disaster

My initial attempt was…well, let’s just say it didn’t go well. I started with: “Künstliche Intelligenz ist sehr gut!” (Artificial intelligence is very good!). Then, trying to explain why, I went on a bit of a tangent about how efficient it is and how much time it saves people. I even threw in a phrase my colleague Mark used – “Das spart Zeit!” (That saves time!) – thinking it sounded sophisticated.

But then I realized I hadn’t actually made a proper argument! Frau Schmidt gently corrected me. “No, no, Luke,” she said with a small smile. “You need more detail. Why do you think it’s good? What are the potential downsides?” She pointed out that my sentence was too simple and lacked supporting information. “Du musst deine Meinung begründen!” (You must justify your opinion!).

Talking About It – Real German Conversations

I started asking around at work, trying to get a sense of what people were thinking about this AI art. I asked Markus, the guy who fixes the printers, “Was hältst du von Bildern, die Computer machen?” (What do you think of pictures made by computers?). He looked completely baffled! He said, “Ich verstehe nicht! Ist das Kunst? Wie kann eine Maschine Schönheit erzeugen?” (I don’t understand! Is that art? How can a machine create beauty?)

It was incredibly frustrating. I wanted to explain my own thoughts, but I kept getting stuck trying to find the right words. I realized I needed to focus on practical vocabulary and phrases I could actually use in a conversation – things like: “Ich finde es interessant…” (I find it interesting…) or “Das ist eine gute Frage…” (That’s a good question…).

Example Phrases & Sentence Structures

Here are some useful phrases I’ve learned that have really helped me build my arguments:

  • “Mir scheint, dass…” (It seems to me that…) – Good for stating your initial impression.
  • “Ich bin der Meinung, dass…” (I am of the opinion that…) – The classic starting phrase!
  • “Das Problem ist…”(The problem is…) – Useful when you want to point out a negative aspect.
  • “Aber ich denke auch, dass…” (But I also think that…) – Important for adding nuance and acknowledging different perspectives.

I practiced using these phrases with a friend, Sarah, who’s fluent in Deutsch. She helped me refine my sentences and make sure they sounded natural. She corrected my pronunciation of “künstlich” – it’s a tricky word!

Realistic Scenarios & Mistakes

Yesterday, I was talking to my landlord, Herr Weber, about the building. He pointed out a beautiful painting in his office – a very traditional German landscape. I blurted out, “Das ist ja auch von einer Maschine gemacht!” (That’s also made by a machine!). He stared at me! It took me a moment to realize I’d completely missed the point and was comparing a carefully crafted oil painting with AI-generated images. “Luke, das ist ein sehr unterschiedliches Thema!” (Luke, that’s a very different topic!). It was embarrassing but a good learning experience!

The Telc B1.2 Focus – Building Arguments

The key thing Frau Schmidt keeps hammering home is developing arguments. I’m starting to understand that it’s not enough to just state my opinion; I need evidence and reasoning. Like, if I think AI art could be valuable, I could talk about how it might open up new creative possibilities for people who don’t have artistic skills. I could say something like: “Vielleicht können Menschen mit anderen Fähigkeiten von KI-Kunst lernen und ihre eigenen kreativen Ideen entwickeln.” (Maybe people with other abilities can learn from AI art and develop their own creative ideas).

Moving Forward – Practical Steps

I’m going to keep practicing these phrases and focusing on building well-structured arguments. I’m also going to read more German articles about technology and art – maybe even browse some of this “AI Art” myself (carefully!). And, most importantly, I’m going to keep asking questions and making mistakes. “Fehler sind wichtig!” (Mistakes are important!) Maybe one day I’ll be able to express my opinion about AI-generated art in perfect German – or at least, confidently enough to hold a decent conversation with Markus about it!

Vocabulary Roundup:

  • Künstliche Intelligenz – Artificial Intelligence
  • Kunst – Art
  • Meinung – Opinion
  • Begründen – To justify/support
  • Das spart Zeit! – That saves time!
  • Was hältst du von…? – What do you think of…?
