TELC B1.2 Writing: Discuss How AI Changes Office Work

My First Time Tackling TELC B1.2 Writing: The Office and a Little Bit of Confusion

Okay, so here I am, six months in Berlin. Finding a job hasn’t been easy, let me tell you. But I’m slowly getting there, mostly thanks to this Telc course. They’ve really focused on practical writing – and today, we had to write about how artificial intelligence is changing office work. Honestly, it felt a bit overwhelming at first, but I think I’m starting to get my head around it.

The Task: A Discussion Piece

The prompt was basically asking me to discuss how AI affects everyday tasks in an office. They wanted examples and a clear opinion – not just a list of facts. It felt like something you’d actually talk about with colleagues, right? Like, “Hast du schon gehört…?” (Have you heard…? )

I started by brainstorming everything I thought came to mind when I even heard the words “AI in an office.” Then I realised I needed to structure it properly. The course materials kept saying things like “Versuchen Sie, eine klare Struktur zu verwenden,” (Try to use a clear structure) which just made me want to hide under my desk!

My First Draft – A Complete Mess

My first attempt was… well, let’s just say it wasn’t pretty. I got so caught up trying to sound intelligent that I ended up writing something completely rambling and confusing. I used words like “algorithm” and “synergy” which honestly felt really forced. I even tried to use a phrase my colleague, Markus, kept saying – “Das ist doch totaler Quatsch!” (That’s total nonsense!) but it just sounded awkward.

Here’s a little snippet:

“Die Anwendung von künstlicher Intelligenz in der Büroumgebung stellt eine signifikante Veränderung dar. Die Algorithmen, die von Unternehmen verwendet werden, ermöglichen eine effizientere Datenerfassung und -verarbeitung. Es ist wichtig zu beachten, dass diese Systeme die menschliche Arbeitsleistung potenziell unterstützen können, aber auch Risiken bergen…”

(The application of artificial intelligence in the office environment represents a significant change. The algorithms used by companies enable more efficient data collection and processing. It is important to note that these systems can potentially support human work performance but also pose risks…)

Yeah… it was awful. My supervisor, Frau Schmidt, marked it down heavily for being too formal and using unnecessarily complicated language. She said, “Das ist zu akademisch!” (That’s too academic!). I realised then that focusing on sounding clever wasn’t the point. It had to sound natural, like a conversation.

Talking About It – Real German Conversations

So, I talked to some of my colleagues to get a better feel for how they actually talk about AI in the office. I asked Karl, who works in accounting, “Was machen Sie denn mit KI im Büro?” (What do you do with AI at the office?) He explained that his company is using something called “Datenanalyse” (data analysis) software – basically, it helps them spot trends and predict things.

“Wir nutzen es, um zu sehen, welche Kunden am meisten Umsatz machen und wo wir unsere Marketingbemühungen konzentrieren sollten,” he said. (We use it to see which customers generate the most revenue and where we should focus our marketing efforts.) He then used a phrase I really liked: “Es ist wie ein digitaler Assistent!” (It’s like a digital assistant!).

I also spoke with Lisa, who works in HR. She told me they’re using AI to screen resumes – “Das spart uns viel Zeit und hilft uns dabei, die besten Kandidaten zu finden.” (That saves us a lot of time and helps us find the best candidates.) She added, “Aber man muss trotzdem aufpassen, dass man nicht zu schnell Entscheidungen trifft!” (But you still have to be careful not to make decisions too quickly!).

Practical Vocabulary & Phrases

Here are some phrases I found really useful:

  • Datenanalyse: Data analysis
  • Künstliche Intelligenz: Artificial intelligence
  • Automatisierung: Automation
  • Der Workflow: The workflow (the process of work)
  • Effizienter: More efficient
  • Qualitätssicherung: Quality control
  • Die Mitarbeiterzufriedenheit: Employee satisfaction

My Second Attempt – A Little Better, But Still…

This time, I tried to be more conversational. I focused on describing how AI is changing things, rather than just stating facts. I used simpler language and included a few personal touches.

“Ich finde es total verrückt, wie die KI jetzt bei der Dateneingabe hilft. Früher musste ich stundenlang Tabellen ausfüllen – jetzt geht das alles viel schneller! Aber ich mache mir auch ein bisschen Sorgen, dass vielleicht nicht mehr so viele Leute gebraucht werden.” (I think it’s totally crazy how AI is now helping with data entry. Used to, I had to fill out tables for hours – now it all goes much faster! But I’m also a little worried that maybe not as many people will be needed.)

Frau Schmidt marked this one down less harshly, saying it was “verständlicher” (more understandable). But she still suggested I focus more on the potential challenges. She said, “Es ist wichtig, auch die Nachteile zu erwähnen.” (It’s important to mention the disadvantages too.).

Looking Ahead – A Little Less Panicked

Honestly, this whole experience was a little overwhelming. But I’m starting to see that it’s not about memorizing fancy words or writing perfect sentences. It’s about being able to discuss these things in German – to understand what’s going on and to express my own thoughts clearly.

I think the next step is to practice more conversations, maybe with a language partner. And definitely listen to how native speakers talk about technology – you can learn so much! “Weiter geht’s!” (Let’s keep going!)
