TELC B1.2 Writing: Explain Why Employees Need AI Skills

My Struggle with German and Why Everyone’s Talking About… Skills?

Okay, so here I am, almost a year in Berlin. “Fast lernen!” they said. “Just learn fast!” they shouted when I told them I was moving to Germany. It’s not just fast. It’s… persistent. And frustrating. Especially when I try to understand these conversations about… well, it seems like everyone is suddenly obsessed with “Skills.”

The Telc B1.2 Writing Task – A Big Headache

My Deutschkurs (German course) is focusing on the TELC B1.2 writing exam. It’s supposed to be about explaining things clearly, and honestly, I’m finding it incredibly difficult. Specifically, they want me to write something about why employees need certain skills, and they threw in this word “KI” – which I’ve learned means “artificial intelligence.” Seriously, KI?

I keep getting lost in the details, and my German feels… wobbly. Yesterday, Frau Schmidt, my teacher, gave me feedback on a draft. “Deine Argumente sind gut,” she said, “aber du musst konkreter sein!” (Your arguments are good, but you must be more concrete!). She’s right. I was rambling about… something. Honestly, I don’t even remember exactly what!

Talking to my Kollegen – A Confusing Conversation

The real challenge isn’t the writing itself; it’s understanding why everyone is so concerned about these skills. I was chatting with Markus, a colleague in my new marketing job (I work for a small company that sells organic fruit), and he said, “Wir müssen uns weiterbilden. Die KI verändert alles.” (“We need to continue our training. The KI is changing everything.”)

I asked him, “Was meinst du genau?” (What do you mean exactly?) He launched into this explanation about “algorithmische Effizienz” (algorithmic efficiency) and how things would be… ‘optimiert’ (optimized). I nodded politely, trying to look like I understood, but honestly, it sounded incredibly complicated. It felt like he was speaking a different language entirely!

He added something that really threw me: “Es geht nicht nur um Zahlen, sondern um Kreativität!” (“It’s not just about numbers, but creativity!”) Which is true, right? But how does AI relate to creativity? I spent the rest of the day trying to figure this out.

Examples in Everyday German – Useful Phrases

Let’s look at some actual phrases I’ve heard that are helpful for understanding this conversation:

  • “Die Maschine lernt.” (The machine learns.) – This is a super common phrase when people talk about KI. It means the AI gets better over time as it processes more data.
  • “Das System wird intelligenter.” (The system will become more intelligent.) – They use this to describe how KI improves itself.
  • “Es ist effizienter.” (“It is more efficient.”) – This comes up constantly when people talk about using AI to streamline processes, like ordering fruit from our suppliers. We’re trying to automate the data entry now!

I even overheard two colleagues discussing it in the canteen:

“Ich habe gehört, sie wollen einen Chatbot für die Kundenberatung einsetzen.” (“I heard they want to use a chatbot for customer service.”)

“Das ist interessant! Aber ich glaube, wir brauchen immer noch menschliche Empathie.” (“That’s interesting! But I think we still need human empathy.”) – See? It’s all about balancing the technology with… well, people.

My Mistakes and How to Fix Them (Hopefully!)

I made a huge mistake last week when I was trying to explain something to my boss, Herr Schmidt (yes, another Schmidt!). I said, “Die KI wird die Arbeit ersetzen!” (“The KI will replace the work!”). He looked at me really seriously and said, “Nein, nein! Die KI wird uns unterstützen!” (“No, no! The KI will support us!”)

He explained that AI isn’t about taking jobs; it’s about making our jobs easier. It’s about handling the repetitive tasks so we can focus on more important things – like, you know, tasting the fruit and talking to customers. This made a lot of sense, actually.

Building My Vocabulary – Kleine Schritte

Here are some key words and phrases I’m trying to learn:

  • Datenanalyse (Data analysis)
  • Prozessoptimierung (Process optimization)
  • Maschinelles Lernen (Machine learning) – This is a longer phrase, but it’s important.
  • Benutzerfreundlichkeit (User-friendliness) – Important when discussing new systems!

I’m still struggling with the TELC B1.2 writing task, but I’m slowly building my vocabulary and understanding. And honestly, just hearing people talk about “KI” and how it might change things is making me think harder about my own skills – not just in German, but in everything. Maybe that’s what Frau Schmidt wanted me to do all along!

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I need to go find some organic apples. And maybe learn a few more phrases… “Die KI wird uns unterstützen!”
