My Journey to Describe a Future Career in Germany – TELC B1.2 Writing
Okay, so here I am, almost six months in Berlin now, and honestly? The biggest hurdle hasn’t been learning German (though that’s definitely been a rollercoaster!), it’s been tackling these little exams like the one for my job training – the TELC B1.2. They want me to write about a future career, specifically describing how I see myself working with something called “KI” – you know, Artificial Intelligence. Sounds complicated, right? It feels even more complicated when you’re trying to explain it in German!
The Task: Describe My Future Career Related to KI
The prompt was basically this: “Beschreiben Sie Ihre berufliche Zukunft im Bereich der Künstlichen Intelligenz (KI).” Or, “Describe your professional future in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).” Sounds simple enough on paper, doesn’t it? Except when you actually try to think about it. I wanted to sound professional, but also… real.
I spent a good few hours staring at my notepad, feeling completely overwhelmed. The first thing that popped into my head was building robots – that felt too cliché, and frankly, not something I really envisioned myself doing. Then I thought about data analysis; maybe I could work with information systems? But how to explain that in a way that wouldn’t sound like I was just saying “I want to look at numbers all day”?
First Attempts – A Hilarious Mess!
My initial draft was… well, let’s just say it needed a lot of work. I started with something like: “Ich werde in der Zukunft mit KI arbeiten und viele Daten analysieren. Es wird sehr interessant!” (I will work with AI in the future and analyze a lot of data. It will be very interesting!). My supervisor, Frau Schmidt, read it over and just stared at me. She said, gently, “Alice, das ist… zu einfach. Du musst es konkreter machen.” (Alice, that is… too simple. You need to make it more concrete.)
She was right! It sounded completely robotic and didn’t give any real sense of my aspirations. I realized I needed to add details – the why behind my interest. It’s easier said than done when you’re wrestling with German grammar. I kept getting tripped up on the past perfect tense – “Ich hatte gedacht…” (I had thought…) felt ridiculously complicated.
Talking About My Ideas with Kollegen (Coworkers)
One thing that helped immensely was talking to my colleagues, particularly Thomas, who works in IT support. He’s a really helpful guy and doesn’t judge when I butcher the language! We were discussing the potential of KI for improving customer service, and he used the phrase “die Kundenzufriedenheit erhöhen” (to increase customer satisfaction). Suddenly it clicked. Instead of just saying “Ich werde Daten analysieren”, I could talk about why I’d be analyzing data – to help a company improve its services.
I tried this out: “Ich glaube, KI kann helfen, die Prozesse in einem Unternehmen zu optimieren. Ich könnte Daten sammeln und analysieren, um herauszufinden, wo es Verbesserungspotenzial gibt.” (I believe that AI can help optimize processes in a company. I could collect and analyze data to find areas for improvement.)
Thomas corrected my word choice – “Besser wäre ‘Daten auswerten’ statt ‘Data sammeln’,” he said. (Better would be ‘evaluate data’ instead of ‘collect data’) – small things like that make such a difference!
Realistic German Phrases & Vocabulary
Here are some phrases I found really useful for describing my plans:
- KI-gestützten Lösungen: KI-supported solutions
- Datenmanagement: Data management
- Algorithmische Prozesse: Algorithmic processes
- Nutzerverhalten analysieren: Analyze user behavior
- die Effizienz steigern: to increase efficiency
- Probleme lösen: to solve problems
- Inhalte personalisieren: To personalize content. I used this when talking about tailoring recommendations based on data.
A More Complete Example (Still Practicing!)
Okay, after several rewrites and lots of feedback from Frau Schmidt, I finally managed something that felt… okay. Here’s a simplified version:
(I see my professional future in collaborating with AI in the field of customer service. I believe that AI can help us better understand our customers’ needs and improve our services. I could analyze data on user behavior to, for example, suggest new products or personalized recommendations. My goal would be to increase process efficiency and enhance customer satisfaction.)
It still feels a little stiff, but it’s much closer to what I want to say! I know I need more practice, but at least now I have some concrete ideas – and a better understanding of how to express them in German.
Next Steps – Learning More!
My next challenge is to really delve deeper into specific applications of KI. I’m planning on reading articles online (using Google Translate, cautiously!) about different industries where AI is being used – healthcare, finance, even tourism. And maybe, just maybe, I’ll ask Thomas for a few more pointers. “Bitte, erklären Sie mir den Unterschied zwischen ‘Maschinelles Lernen’ und ‘Deep Learning’,” (Please explain the difference between ‘machine learning’ and ‘deep learning’) – I know it’s going to be another long journey, but hey, at least I’m learning!
