My Struggle with German – and TELC B1.2 Writing!

Okay, so here I am, a year into living in Berlin. It’s amazing, truly. The food is incredible, the people are generally friendly (though sometimes their directness takes me by surprise!), and I’ve finally landed a job translating technical manuals – das ist toll! But let’s be honest, my German isn’t perfect. Not even close. And right now, I’m stuck on this TELC B1.2 Writing exam, specifically the part where they want me to explain the difference between “Training Data” and “Testing Data.” Honestly, it felt like another thing I couldn’t crack. Then I started noticing how it kept popping up in conversations…

The Confusion Begins: A Coffee Shop Mishap

It all started last week at my Kaffeehaus – that little place near Potsdamer Platz where I get my morning coffee and die Zeitung. I was trying to order a Cappuccino mit einem Schuss Vanille, and the barista, a lovely older man named Klaus, kept saying things like, “Okay, so wir trainieren das System, um eure Bestellung zu verstehen.” He was clearly trying to help me, but his words just swam around in my head. I didn’t understand what he meant by “trainieren.” I blurted out something about data and algorithms, which he looked at with a completely bewildered expression!

He eventually explained, through much gesturing and slower German, that he was testing if the coffee machine recognized my order. That’s when it hit me – there’s a difference! My brain just hadn’t made the connection before. This is what I need to be able to explain in the exam.

Training Data: Learning the Ropes

Basically, “Training Data” is all about learning. Think of it like Ich lerne Deutsch. It’s the information you feed into a system – whether that’s a computer program or, as Klaus was doing, trying to understand my order. In my job translating manuals, the training data would be all those technical documents I read and studied, slowly building up my vocabulary and understanding of German engineering terminology.

For example, someone might show me how to use a specific piece of software: “Schau, zuerst klickst du hier, dann auf ‘Datei’, und dann wählst du ‘Öffnen’…” (Look, first you click here, then on ‘File’, and then you choose ‘Open’…). That initial instruction – das ist Training Data for me. It’s how I learn the steps!

Testing Data: Putting it to the Test

“Testing Data,” on the other hand, is when you actually use what you’ve learned. It’s like taking a test after studying. Let’s say I used all that training data about translating hydraulic systems to complete a translation of an instruction manual for a new excavator. Das ist die Testerdaten. The test then checks if my translated version is correct and accurate.

I had a similar experience with my boss, Herr Schmidt. He gave me a short paragraph from the manual – ein kurzer Text – and asked me to translate it. “Okay, probiere es jetzt!” (Okay, try it now!). That was testing data. I wasn’t just absorbing information; I was applying it!

Real-Life Examples in German

Here are some more examples I’ve picked up:

• Klaus at the Coffee Shop: “Wir trainieren den Bezahlscanner mit vielen verschiedenen Zahlungskarten.” (We are training the payment scanner with many different credit cards.) – Das ist Training Data.
• Herr Schmidt on a Project: “Ich gebe dir einige Beispiele, die wir als Testerdaten verwenden werden.” (I’m giving you some examples that we will use as testing data.) – Das ist Tester Daten.

Why Does This Matter for the Exam?

The exam question wants me to be able to explain this difference clearly. They’re not expecting me to dive into computer science! They want me to show them I understand how information is used in a learning process, and then tested for accuracy. It’s about demonstrating understanding of concepts, not regurgitating technical jargon.

I think the key is to use simple language and relate it to everyday situations – like my coffee order or Herr Schmidt’s work. I need to show I can describe how information is initially learned (Training Data) and then used to assess that learning (Testing Data). Ich muss mich konzentrieren! (I have to concentrate!).

My Next Steps

I’m going to keep practicing explaining this concept out loud – even if it feels a little silly. I’m also going to look for more examples of how “training” and “testing” are used in my daily life here in Berlin. Maybe next time I’ll ask Klaus at the Kaffeehaus about data analysis!
