TELC B1.2 Writing: Organize an Environmental Awareness Campaign

My Big Project: Organizing an Environmental Campaign – Getting Ready for TELC B1.2

Okay, so here I am, living in Munich. It’s beautiful, it’s amazing… and let me tell you, getting around and actually doing things here can be a bit of a challenge without really strong German. That’s why I decided to tackle this TELC B1.2 Writing task – organizing an environmental awareness campaign – feels like a really good next step. It’s practical, it needs German, and honestly, the thought of actually making a difference is motivating!

The Task: “Schutzgebiet Fürbünden” – Protecting Our Local Area

The assignment was to plan a campaign called “Schutzgebiet Fürbünden” – roughly translated as “Protecting the Förnbund area.” The Förnbund area is this beautiful forestland just outside of Munich, and apparently it’s been getting a little neglected. My task was to write a proposal outlining what I’d do to raise awareness and encourage people to look after it. It felt pretty daunting at first.

First Steps: Brainstorming in German

I started by brainstorming with my flatmate, Steven. He’s lived here his whole life and knows everyone! We were talking about what we could tatsächlich (actually) do.

“Also, wir müssen Leute informieren!” he said excitedly. (“Also, we need to inform people!”) That felt like a good starting point – figuring out who I needed to contact.

I realized I needed ideas for the campaign itself. I thought about things like posters, social media… and decided I’d write a letter to the local council. I practiced phrases like: “Ich möchte die Aufmerksamkeit auf das Problem lenken.” (“I want to draw attention to the problem.”) And “Es ist wichtig, dass wir etwas unternehmen.” (“It’s important that we do something.”)

Talking to the Locals – Ordering Information (and Making a Few Mistakes!)

Next, I wanted to find out what was already being done. I went to a small community center called “Volkshalle” and asked for information about environmental initiatives. This is where things got…interesting.

“Entschuldigen Sie, könnten Sie mir sagen, gibt es hier irgendwelche Gruppen, die sich für den Umweltschutz engagieren?” (“Excuse me, could you tell me if there are any groups here that are involved in environmental protection?”) I asked Frau Schmidt, a very kind older woman who runs the center.

She looked at me with a slightly confused expression and said, “Umweltschutz? Ja, ja, natürlich! Aber was genau suchen Sie?” (“Environmental protection? Yes, yes, of course! But what exactly are you looking for?”)

I fumbled through my German, trying to explain the campaign. I used “eine Kampagne für Umweltbewusstsein” (a campaign for environmental awareness) but she kept gently correcting me – “Nein, nein, das ist zu kompliziert! Einfach ‘Umwelt’ sagen!” (“No, no, that’s too complicated! Just say ‘Umwelt!’”)

It was embarrassing at first, but I realized it wasn’t about sounding perfect. It was about trying to communicate and understanding her. I learned a valuable lesson – simpler language is often better when you’re just trying to get information!

Vocabulary That Actually Helped

Here are some useful phrases I picked up that feel really practical:

  • “Ich bin besorgt über…” (I am concerned about…) – “Ich bin besorgt über den Müll in der Natur.” (“I am concerned about the litter in nature.”)
  • “Wir müssen handeln!” (We need to act!) – Used when motivating people.
  • “Es ist unsere Verantwortung” (It is our responsibility) – Good for emphasizing a sense of duty.
  • “Bitte helfen Sie mit!” (Please help us!) – A classic, but effective.

Writing the Proposal: Getting it Right (Mostly!)

Now I’m working on writing the actual proposal. I’ve focused on keeping my sentences relatively simple and using the vocabulary I’ve been collecting. Here’s a short snippet (I’m still working on this!):

“Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren,

Ich schreibe Ihnen heute, um eine Kampagne zur Förderung des Schutzes unseres lokalen Waldgebietes, dem Förnbund, vorzuschlagen. Viele Menschen sind sich der Bedeutung dieses Gebietes für unsere Umwelt nicht bewusst. Ich möchte durch Aufklärung die Aufmerksamkeit auf diese Problematik lenken und dazu ermutigen, den Wald zu respektieren und zu schützen.”

(“Dear Sir/Madam, I am writing to you today to propose a campaign to promote the protection of our local forest area, the Förnbund, Many people are not aware of the importance of this area for our environment. I want to draw attention to this problem and encourage people to respect and protect the forest.”)

Next Steps – Feedback is Key!

I know I need feedback on my writing. Steven has offered to read it, and I’m planning to ask someone at the Volkshalle if they can take a look. The whole process feels really important for building confidence in my German, but more importantly, for learning how to actually communicate effectively.

Wish me luck! I think this campaign is going to be a great way to get involved and maybe even make a difference… Und wer weiß? (And who knows?) Maybe I’ll even convince everyone to recycle properly!
