My First Dive into the German Tech Scene: Krefeld and Java
A Fresh Perspective – And a Lot of Questions
Okay, so moving to Germany has been… intense. Berlin was amazing, obviously, but it was also overwhelming. I’m still getting used to the pace of life, the language, everything. I’m trying to build a career as a Java developer, and that meant finding a place where there was demand. After a frustrating few weeks of applying online, I finally had a productive conversation that pointed me towards Krefeld. I’m based in a smaller town outside of Cologne, and it feels like a good step towards a more sustainable, less hectic life.
Meeting Someone Who Knows the Local Landscape
It all started with a simple question: “Hallo, ich wollte mich erkundigen, ob es hier in Krefeld viele Möglichkeiten gibt, Java-Entwickler zu finden?” – “Hello, I wanted to inquire if there are many opportunities here in Krefeld for Java developers to find?” I asked a guy I met at a local networking event – he connected me with someone who works in IT recruitment. He gave me the lowdown: “Ja, grundsätzlich gibt es hier in Krefeld einige Unternehmen, die Java-Entwickler suchen. Besonders im Bereich der Industrie und der IT-Sicherheit sind wir gefragt.” – “Yes, there are generally several companies in Krefeld that are looking for Java developers. We’re in demand, particularly in the industrial and IT security sectors.” It sounded good, definitely better than nothing.
Indeed and Dräger Safety: A Cloud Operation Deep Dive
Then he offered to help me find specific jobs, mentioning a role at Dräger Safety. “Haben Sie denn Informationen zu Stellenangeboten, die gut zu den Anforderungen passen, die in der Stellenbeschreibung für Dräger Safety genannt werden?” – “Do you have information on job offers that fit the requirements mentioned in the job description for Dräger Safety?” I’d seen a listing on Indeed (Read More describing a Cloud Operations role with Java and Azure. He quickly checked it out for me. “Ja, ich habe gerade auf Indeed nachgesehen. Es gibt ein paar Stellen, die sehr gut passen, hauptsächlich bei großen Industrieunternehmen in der Umgebung von Krefeld.” – “Yes, I just looked on Indeed. There are a few positions that fit very well, mainly at large industrial companies in the area of Krefeld.”
Unpacking the Azure and Kameras
I was particularly interested in understanding exactly what Dräger Safety was doing. “Was genau macht Dräger Safety denn in Bezug auf Cloud Operations? Ich verstehe, dass sie Kameras streamen und Daten in Azure verarbeiten, aber könnte man das etwas genauer erklären?” – “What exactly does Dräger Safety do regarding Cloud Operations? I understand that they stream cameras and process data in Azure, but could you explain it a bit more precisely?” He explained that they’re developing a platform for video surveillance for safety-critical facilities. “Im Grunde entwickeln sie eine Plattform zur Videoüberwachung für sicherheitskritische Anlagen. Die Kameras übertragen die Bilddaten live in die Cloud, wo sie von Azure-Diensten verarbeitet und gespeichert werden.” – “Basically, they’re developing a video surveillance platform for safety-critical facilities. The cameras transmit the image data live to the cloud, where it’s processed and stored by Azure services.” It was a pretty standard use of cloud technology, but with a huge amount of responsibility. “Und die Java-Entwicklung dort ist wichtig, um diese Prozesse zu steuern und sicherzustellen, dass alles reibungslos läuft. Es geht um Microservices, die die Daten verarbeiten, die Überwachung der Systeme und die Integration mit anderen Sicherheitsmaßnahmen.” – “And Java development there is important to control these processes and ensure everything runs smoothly. It’s about microservices that process the data, monitor the systems, and integrate with other security measures.”
The ‘You Build It, You Run It’ Philosophy
Then he dropped the biggest bombshell: “Ich bin vor allem an der ‘you build it, you run it’-Philosie interessiert. Was bedeutet das konkret im Arbeitsalltag?” – “I’m particularly interested in the ‘you build it, you run it’ philosophy. What does that mean concretely in day-to-day work?” I’d heard of it, but I wasn’t really sure. – “That means you’re not just writing the code, but you’re also responsible for operations – monitoring, troubleshooting, performance optimization, etc. It’s a holistic approach.”
Learning on the Fly – A New Kind of Challenge
It sounded intense, but also incredibly valuable. “Genau. Es ist ein sehr spannender Ansatz, weil man die komplette Wertschöpfungskette sieht.” – “Exactly. It’s a very exciting approach because you see the entire value chain.” I realized that this wasn’t just about writing Java code; it was about taking ownership. I suddenly understood why they were asking about microservices – it was about building scalable, resilient systems. I realized I had a lot to learn about DevOps and the entire lifecycle of a software application.

This conversation was a huge help. I’m definitely going to keep an eye on those Dräger Safety jobs on Indeed. And, I need to start brushing up on my German – I still stumbled over a few phrases! I’m determined to make this work, to build a career, and to finally feel at home in Krefeld. Wish me luck!
