My First Echo Show 5: A Berlin Beginner’s Guide

Learning German is hard. Really hard. But living in Berlin, you quickly realize you need every advantage you can get. My latest acquisition? A brand-new Echo Show 5. It started with a conversation like this…

Hallo, hast du das neue Echo Show 5 schon gesehen? Ja, klar! Ich habe mir das gerade bestellt. Die neue Generation sieht echt schick aus. Echt? Was gefällt dir denn daran?

My Initial Reactions and German Phrases

Okay, so it’s pretty good. “Die Bildqualität ist ziemlich gut,” my friend said. It’s definitely better than nothing – especially since I’m still getting used to everything. I keep stumbling over German, and sometimes I just end up pointing and saying “Das!” (That!). I need to work on my pronunciation, obviously. I was trying to say, “Wie ist die Qualität der Bilder?” and nearly got it wrong! I’m definitely relying on Google Translate a lot right now, which I know I shouldn’t, but it’s a lifesaver when I’m completely lost.

Setting It Up & That First Alexa Command

The setup was surprisingly easy. The instructions were mostly in German, but thankfully Google Translate’s voice function helped me out a lot. It kept asking me things like, “Möchtest du Alexa als deine bevorzugte Sprache festlegen?” (Would you like to set Alexa as your preferred language?). I chose Deutsch, obviously! Then came the fun part – actually using it.

I’ve had a few awkward moments trying to tell Alexa what to do. Like, I tried to say “Spiele Musik” (Play music) and it kept asking me, “Welche Musik möchtest du hören?” (Which music do you want to hear?). It took me a few tries, and a lot of frustrated German, to finally get it to play my Spotify playlist. It was a small victory! “Super! Das funktioniert!” (Super! That works!).

Smart Home Woes and Alexa’s Help

The biggest reason I bought the Echo Show 5 was to help me manage my smart home. I have a smart bulb in my apartment, and honestly, I’ve been wrestling with it for weeks! I’ve tried everything – the app, the remote… nothing seemed to work consistently.

Then I had a conversation with my neighbor, Martin, he said, “Du musst einfach sagen: ‘Licht an!’” (You just have to say: ‘Turn on the light!’). It sounded so simple. I tried it, and… it worked! “Alexa, Licht an!” (Alexa, turn on the light!). It was amazing! He told me, “Alexa macht das ziemlich einfach.” (Alexa makes this pretty easy).

A Little Misunderstanding (and a Helpful Correction)

The other day, I was trying to show my family’s photos from the wall using Alexa. I said, “Zeige mir die Fotos von der Familie an der Wand.” (Show me the photos of the family on the wall). But Alexa just kept saying, “Ich verstehe deine Frage nicht.” (I don’t understand your question). It was so frustrating! I realized I needed to be more specific. I eventually figured out that I needed to say, “Alexa, zeige mir die Familienfotos.” (Alexa, show me the family photos).

Looking Ahead – More German, More Alexa

I’m definitely still a beginner, and I’m going to make plenty of mistakes. But I think the Echo Show 5 is going to be a really useful tool for me – both for learning German and for simplifying my life here in Berlin. Now, I just need to master saying, “Was ist das?” (What is that?) without saying “Das!”. Wish me luck! Ich drücke dir die Daumen! (I’m wishing you luck!).
