My New Phone & Getting the Hang of Things in Berlin

Okay, so things are still a bit… chaotic, right? Moving to Berlin was amazing – the culture, the food, the sheer energy of the place – but also, let’s be honest, completely overwhelming at times. I’m Liam, by the way, and I’m from Manchester. I’m working as a freelance translator, which is good because it means I can work from anywhere (though right now, my desk is basically my tiny apartment in Neukölln).

Talking Tech with Sarah

The other day, I was chatting with Sarah, a girl I met at the vegan cafe near my place – “The Green Spoon” – and she was showing me her new phone. She was saying, “Hallo! Hast du schon das neue Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge gesehen?” (Hello! Have you seen the new Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge?). I hadn’t actually, but she was going on and on about how cool it was. “Ja, klar! Ich habe mir gerade das mit 32 GB gekauft. Was sagst du dazu? Oh, cool!” (Yeah, of course! I just bought it with 32 GB. What do you think?).

I told her, “Ich finde die auch super. Und die Edge Display ist echt ein Hingucker!” (I think it’s great too. And the Edge Display is really a showstopper!). She said, “Das stimmt! Ich habe gelesen, dass das Display sehr gut in der Sonne ist.” (That’s true! I read that the display is very good in the sun.)

Camera Quality & a Little Confusion

Then she started showing me pictures she’d taken of her dog. “Die Kamera ist fantastisch! Die Fotos sind so scharf und die Farben sind super. Ich habe gerade ein paar Bilder von meinem Hund gemacht, die sind total toll geworden. Honestly, the pictures were actually really good. But then she started worrying about the battery. “Aber ich habe gehört, dass die Akkulaufzeit nicht so gut ist, wenn man viel Videos schaut. Das stimmt wohl. Aber für alltägliche Nutzung reicht es doch.” (But I’ve heard that the battery life isn’t so good if you watch a lot of videos. That’s probably true. But it’s enough for everyday use).

German Phrases I’m Still Learning

I was trying to understand her, and I kept saying things like, “Akkulaufzeit?” (battery life?) when I should have just been listening. It’s so easy to get lost in the conversation! I really need to improve my German listening skills. I’m trying to use Du with everyone, which feels a bit weird at first, but Sarah says it’s the polite thing to do. “Du” is informal, right? “Sie” is formal. Ugh, grammar.

Small Wins

Despite the confusion, it’s been pretty cool. Getting used to navigating Berlin using Google Maps (with my terrible pronunciation of addresses, naturally) and figuring out the U-Bahn (the subway) is a challenge, but also pretty rewarding. I even managed to order a “Latte Macchiato” – “Ein Latte Macchiato, bitte!” – at a cafe the other day. It was… interesting. They kept asking if I wanted sugar. I just nodded enthusiastically!

Looking Ahead

I’m planning on checking out the Mauerpark flea market this weekend. Sarah suggested it, and she said it’s a really good way to experience Berlin. “Das ist eine gute Idee!” (That’s a good idea!). I’m hoping to actually understand what people are selling, though. Wish me luck!
