Learning German: A New Speaker & A Chat with Alice
Okay, so life in Berlin is… intense. It’s amazing, brilliant, and sometimes completely overwhelming all at the same time. I’ve been here six months now, working as a freelance translator, and I’m slowly, slowly getting the hang of things. But let’s be honest, the language is still a massive challenge. I spend half my day nodding and smiling, desperately trying to understand what people are actually saying.

The other day, Alice – she’s a lovely girl from Ireland working in a cafe near my apartment – was telling me about her new speaker. She was going on about how good it sounded, especially the bass. I grabbed Alice on my way back from the U-Bahn (that’s a train for you non-Germans!), and I started to tell her about it. “Hallo! Hast du schon mal von dem Anker SoundCore 2 Speaker gehört?” I asked, feeling a little awkward.
Alice looked confused. “Hallo! Nein, was ist das denn?”
I explained, “Ich habe mir gerade die Bewertungen angeschaut. Er klingt echt gut, besonders wegen der Bass Treiber und der 24-Stunden Akkulaufzeit. Oh, das klingt interessant! Ich brauche einen neuen Lautsprecher für unterwegs.”
“Echt? Ich suche auch gerade einen.”
“Echt?” Alice replied, intrigued. “Ich suche auch gerade einen. Der sieht ganz cool aus, schwarz und der IPX7 Schutz ist auch gut. Ja, der Wasserschutz ist super, besonders wenn man ihn am Strand oder am Pool benutzt.”
I nodded, completely agreeing. I’d been thinking about getting something waterproof for the summer, especially since I’m trying to explore more of Berlin’s lakes.
“Hast du schon mal überlegt, ihn auf Amazon zu kaufen?”

I was a little worried. I hate things being too loud! But then I thought, maybe I could just adjust the volume. “Vielleicht sollte ich das mal ausprobieren. Ich denke, es wäre eine gute Investition.”
“Was für eine Handys benutzt du denn?”
Then she asked a really good question. “Was für eine Handys benutzt du denn? Ich habe ein iPhone, aber der Speaker soll ja auch mit Samsung Galaxy kompatibel sein. Super! Dann können wir ihn ja beide testen. Genau!”
I use an iPhone, of course. It’s what I’m used to. But it’s good to know it works with Android. It’s one of those little things that can be a pain when you’re trying to adapt to a new system. I kept thinking about my alte Handy (old phone), a Nokia. It was so simple!
Learning Phrases
Here are a few useful German phrases I picked up from our conversation:

- “Was ist das denn?” – What is that?
- “Ich suche auch gerade einen.” – I’m looking for one too.
- “Der Wasserschutz ist super.” – The waterproof protection is great.
- “Vielleicht sollte ich das mal ausprobieren.” – Maybe I should try that.
Next Steps
I’m definitely going to check out that Anker speaker. It seems like a solid option for my Berlin life. Maybe Alice and I can test it out this weekend. I need to learn more German, obviously, but conversations like this – even when I’m completely lost – are a really helpful part of the process. Tschüss (goodbye) for now!
