Talking about cleaning products and sustainability – Grammar: Passive voice

My First German Conversations: A Berlin Perspective

Okay, so this is weird, right? Writing in English about learning German, especially when I’m actually living in Berlin. It feels a little meta, but honestly, the biggest challenge I’m facing isn’t mastering the grammar (though that’s definitely a work in progress!), it’s just…talking. Getting the words out, understanding what people really mean. My German is patchy at best.

“Hallo! Wie geht es dir heute?” – And the Struggle is Real

I had this conversation with Alice yesterday – she’s a colleague at the design studio where I’m working. It started with the standard greeting: “Hallo! Wie geht es dir heute?” (Hello! How are you today?). I felt like a complete idiot, saying it so slowly, but she smiled and replied, “Hallo Alice! Mir geht’s gut, danke. Und dir?” (Hello Alice! I’m doing well, thanks. And you?).

I managed a shaky, “Mir geht es auch gut, danke.” (I’m also doing well, thanks.) Then she asked, “Hast du schon neue Reinigungsmittel gekauft?” (Have you bought any new cleaning products?). Suddenly, I realized I was completely lost. I’d been so focused on the greeting that I hadn’t prepared for a follow-up question.

Eco-Friendly Cleaning and a Whole Lot of Questions

I mumbled something about looking for eco-friendly products, which I am doing – I’m always on the lookout for greener options. Alice explained that she’d bought a new bio-möbelreiniger (furniture cleaner). “Er wird empfohlen, weil er weniger schädliche Chemikalien enthält.” (It’s recommended because it contains fewer harmful chemicals.) That’s a good thing, right? I’m always a bit overwhelmed by all the ingredients lists; they’re just… so long!

(Don’t you think manufacturers often passively ignore the impact on the environment?). She nodded seriously. “Ja, das stimmt leider.” (Yes, that’s unfortunately true.)

It’s frustrating, isn’t it? Like, companies talk about being sustainable, but then you read articles about how products aren’t actually recyclable anymore. “Ja, das stimmt leider. Die Produktionsprozesse werden oft nicht transparent gemacht und es wird nicht genug in die Entwicklung von nachhaltigen Verpackungen investiert.” (Yes, that’s true. Production processes are often not transparent, and there isn’t enough investment in the development of sustainable packaging.) It’s like they’re just saying the words without actually doing anything.

The Recycling Problem – A Real Head Scratcher

We were talking about recycling, and it really hit home. I genuinely struggle with it. I try to sort my trash, but sometimes I’m just confused about what goes where. It feels like the whole system is set up to make it difficult. I even heard a discussion about how many products aren’t easily recyclable these days. “Manchmal wird man ja überfordert von all den Inhaltsstoffen.” (Sometimes you’re just overwhelmed by all the ingredients). It’s a complicated world.

Pressure and Responsibility – Who’s Really To Blame?

Alice pointed out that there needs to be more pressure from consumer organizations and the public. “Man müsste mehr Druck von Verbraucherorganisationen und der Öffentlichkeit ausrichten.” (One should exert more pressure from consumer organizations and the public.) I agree! It feels like we’re constantly told to “green” our purchases, but the manufacturers aren’t actually changing anything. “Wir sollen einfach nur ‘grüne’ Produkte kaufen, ohne dass die Hersteller wirklich etwas ändern.” (We are just supposed to buy ‘green’ products without the manufacturers actually changing anything).

I also think it’s a shame that so many products are just labelled “umweltfreundlich” (environmentally friendly) even if the production processes are incredibly harmful. “Ich finde es auch schade, dass viele Produkte einfach nur ‘umweltfreundlich’ beworben werden, obwohl die Herstellungsprozesse doch enorm belastend sind.” (I also find it sad that many products are simply advertised as ‘environmentally friendly’ even though the production processes are incredibly damaging).

A Better Solution?

We started talking about what could be done. “Man könnte ja auch fordern, dass die Hersteller die Umweltauswirkungen ihrer Produkte genauer berechnen und kontrollieren lassen.” (One could also demand that manufacturers calculate and have their product’s environmental impact accurately calculated and assessed.) That seems like a good idea! It feels like the responsibility is often passed on to us consumers. “Die Verantwortung wird oft passiv auf die Konsumenten abgewälzt.” (The responsibility is often passively passed on to consumers).

Durability and Repair – A Different Approach

Alice then brought up another important point: “Ja, ich finde, dass die Hersteller auch verstärkt in Forschung und Entwicklung von langlebigeren und reparierbaren Produkten investieren müssen.” (Yes, I think manufacturers should also increasingly invest in research and development of more durable and repairable products.) That would be a proaktive measure, she said. “Das ist ein sehr wichtiger Punkt.” (That’s a very important point). We need to realize it’s not just about buying “grün” (green).

Beyond Green – A Bigger Picture

I realized then that it’s about so much more than just buying eco-friendly products. “Wir müssen uns bewusst machen, dass es mehr als nur das ‘Grüne’ kaufen betrifft.” (We must be aware that it’s more than just buying ‘green’.) It’s about supporting companies that are actually trying to do better, about demanding transparency, and about rethinking our consumption habits.

Right now, I’m still stumbling over my German, but conversations like this – even small ones – are helping me. And honestly, learning about the recycling problems in Berlin is making me even more determined to try and make a difference, one “grünes” product at a time. Ich muss dranbleiben! (I have to keep going!)
