My First Cracks at Understanding Germany – And the Umwelt

Hello, Berlin! It’s Complicated, Isn’t It?

Okay, so I’ve been in Berlin for six months now, working as a freelance translator. It’s amazing, the work is great, and I’m finally starting to feel a little more settled. But honestly, sometimes I feel completely overwhelmed. Not just with the work, but with…everything. Especially when it comes to, you know, being sustainable. It’s a huge thing here, and I’m trying to do my bit, but it’s proving to be a seriously confusing puzzle.

I was grabbing a coffee at that little place near my apartment – you know, the one with the mismatched chairs – and I was chatting with Alice, a colleague who’s also new to the city. She’d just seen this new Umweltzeichen (environmental label) thing called “Wolke von Kantte” (Cloud of Kantte – I still don’t really get the name!).

Hallo! Hast du eigentlich schon mal das neue Umweltzeichen auf der Wolke von Kantte aufgesehen? (Hi! Have you actually ever looked at the new environmental label on the Cloud of Kantte?)

Ja, ich habe es gesehen. (Yes, I’ve seen it.) Es ist ziemlich kompliziert, oder? (It’s pretty complicated, isn’t it?)

Ja, total! (Yeah, totally!) Ich finde es manchmal schwierig zu verstehen, was genau die Siegel bedeuten. (I find it sometimes difficult to understand exactly what the labels mean.) Manchmal werden die Produkte doch trotzdem nicht so nachhaltig, was? (Sometimes the products aren’t that sustainable anyway, right?)

And that’s when it hit me – it is a huge problem.

The Green Wash Trap

Stimmt, das ist ein gutes Problem. (That’s a good problem.) Es wird ja auch oft gesagt, dass die Zertifizierungen von Unternehmen finanziert werden, die nicht immer die strengsten Kriterien erfüllen. (It’s often said that the certifications are funded by companies that don’t always meet the strictest criteria.) Es wird also passiv geprüft, nicht aktiv. (So it’s passively assessed, not actively.) Das ist wirklich erschreckend! (That’s really frightening!)

I’d been reading about it, and it’s like a lot of companies just meet the minimum requirements to get the label. Ich habe gelesen, dass viele Unternehmen nur die minimalen Anforderungen erfüllen, um das Siegel zu bekommen. (I’ve read that many companies only meet the minimum requirements to get the label.) I really think you have to try and find out more.

Decoding the Symbols – It’s a Mess!

Ich finde, man muss trotzdem versuchen, sich zu informieren. (I think you still have to try and find out information.) Vielleicht sollte man mehr auf die Zusammensetzung der Materialien achten, anstatt nur auf das Siegel. (Maybe you should pay more attention to the composition of the materials, instead of just the label.)

Absolut! (Absolutely!) Und die Recycling-Symbole sind auch oft verwirrend. (And the recycling symbols are also often confusing.) Ich weiß nicht, ob ich den Punkt mit dem Dreieck wirklich richtig entsorte. (I don’t know if I really got the triangle symbol right.)

Seriously, it’s baffling. Manchmal wird gesagt, dass die Materialien passiv recycelt werden müssen, aber das ist nicht immer so. (Sometimes it’s said that the materials have to be passively recycled, but that’s not always the case.) Es ist sehr kompliziert! (It’s very complicated!)

I ended up looking up the German explanation of the recycling symbols online – Kreislauffunktion (Circular Function) – and even then, it wasn’t super clear. It’s a constant learning curve.

Small Steps, Big Ideas – And a Little Bit of Doubt

Ich glaube, es ist wichtig, dass wir uns alle darüber bewusst werden und versuchen, bewusser zu konsumieren. (I think it’s important that we all become aware of it and try to consume more consciously.) Es ist ja auch ein Prozess, und wir können nicht von heute auf morgen alles richtig machen. (It’s also a process, and we can’t do everything right overnight.) Das stimmt. (That’s true.) Es ist wichtig, dass die Hersteller auch aktiv daran arbeiten, um die Nachhaltigkeit zu verbessern – es ist ja nicht nur passiv möglich. (It’s important that manufacturers also actively work to improve sustainability – it’s not just passively possible.) Ja, ganz genau. (Yes, exactly.) Es ist eine gemeinsame Aufgabe! (It’s a shared task!)

I know I sound a bit skeptical, but I’m genuinely struggling to trust these labels. It feels like a lot of companies are just appearing to be environmentally friendly without actually making a big difference. I need to do more research, definitely.

Next Steps: Learning More – And Maybe Just Buying Less

Maybe my next step is to actually go to the “Kantte” place and see what they’re selling. Maybe that will give me a better understanding. And I’m going to start looking into where to buy local, organic food – Bio-Lebensmittel (organic food) is definitely on my list.

It’s a lot to take in, but I’m determined to do my part. Even if it’s just starting small, like bringing my own reusable shopping bag (wiederverwendbare Einkaufstasche) to the market. It’s a journey, right? And honestly, the more I learn, the more I realize how much more there is to learn!
