My First Few Weeks Learning German in Berlin

Okay, so here I am, a few months into living in Berlin, and let’s just say it’s been… an adventure. I’ve moved here for a job as a junior graphic designer, and while the work is really interesting, navigating daily life has been a whole other story. Learning German has been essential, obviously, but it’s also been a hilarious and frustrating rollercoaster. I wanted to share some of the things I’ve learned, focusing on how conversations actually sound and how I’m slowly getting the hang of things.

The Initial Greeting – “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir?”

It all started with this – “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir? Hallo Lena! Mir geht’s gut, danke. Und dir? Mir geht’s auch gut.” I met my colleague, Lena, yesterday and this was our first exchange. I still stumble over the pronunciation, especially with “Mir” – it feels so strange coming out of my mouth! But the important thing is I understand what she’s saying, and I can respond. “Mir geht’s gut, danke” basically means “I’m doing well, thanks.” And “Und dir?” is asking “And you?”

Netflix and “Dark” – A Shared Enthusiasm (and Slight Terror!)

After work, I decided to try Netflix – something I’d heard everyone talking about. I spent the evening watching a show called “Dark.” “Echt? Welche denn?” Lena asked when I excitedly told her about it. “Echt?” is like saying “Really?” or “Seriously?”. “Welche denn?” – “Which one?” It’s a really common phrase, and thankfully I’m starting to get it. “Dark” is apparently hugely popular, and honestly, it’s pretty intense! “Die ist total spannend!” – “It’s totally exciting!” I really enjoyed it, although, “Ich fand sie aber etwas gruselig.” – “I found it a bit scary.” – Lena also agreed! We definitely both have a slightly dramatic taste in TV shows.

The Problem with Too Many Choices

One of the things I’ve noticed is that Germans (and maybe it’s just me being new) sometimes get overwhelmed by options. “Aber ich finde, Netflix hat einfach zu viele Serien.” – “But I think Netflix has just too many series.” It’s true! I really prefer when there aren’t a million choices. It’s hard to decide what to watch!

Music Preferences – Spotify vs. YouTube Music

Speaking of choices, it leads to another conversation about music. “Spotify ist eigentlich besser, oder?” – “Spotify is actually better, or?” I’ve been using Spotify a lot to listen to music. “Ich höre da viel Musik” – “I listen to a lot of music there”. I like Spotify because “weil ich meine Playlists besser organisieren kann.” – “because I can organize my playlists better.” But Lena uses YouTube Music. “Ich kann meine Musik aber auch auf YouTube Music hören, aber Spotify ist einfach einfacher.” – “I can listen to my music on YouTube Music too, but Spotify is just simpler.”

The Annoyance of Advertising

However, she has a point – “Ja, Spotify ist super praktisch.” – “Yes, Spotify is super practical.” But “Ich finde aber, dass YouTube Music zu viele Werbung hat.” – “But I think YouTube Music has too much advertising.” It’s incredibly annoying! I much prefer Spotify because “weil es weniger Werbung hat.” – “because it has less advertising.” Seriously, it’s such a distraction. “Das stimmt!” – “That’s true!” – Lena agreed wholeheartedly.

The Verdict: Spotify Wins (For Now!)

“Ich finde, Spotify ist die bessere Option.” – “I think Spotify is the better option.” Absolutely! It’s a small thing, maybe, but it makes a difference. It’s making learning German feel more rewarding too.

Small Steps, Big Progress

I’m still making mistakes – mispronouncing words, mixing up sentence structures. “Ich bin immer noch am Überlegen, was ich schauen soll.” – “I’m still thinking about what I should watch”. It’s a slow process, but I’m starting to understand more and more. And, honestly, just attempting these simple conversations makes me feel more confident. I’m learning German, one “Hallo!” and “Mir geht’s gut” at a time. It’s a challenge, but a really exciting one! I’m definitely going to keep practicing!
