My First Steps into German (and Sustainability!)
Okay, so here I am, a few months into living in Berlin, and let me tell you, it’s… intense. It’s amazing, brilliant, and occasionally baffling all at the same time. I’ve moved here for my job – digital marketing, which seems to translate pretty well across languages – and I’m slowly, painstakingly, learning German. It’s definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever tried to learn, but also the most rewarding.
Meeting Alice – and a Whole New World
The other day, I was grabbing a coffee at a little cafe near my apartment – it’s called “Café am Spreeufer” – and I bumped into this woman, Alice. We started chatting, and it started with something really simple: “Hallo! Wie geht’s dir?” (Hello! How are you?). She replied, “Hallo Alice! Mir geht’s gut, danke. Und dir?” (Hello Alice! I’m good, thanks. And you?). I managed a wobbly, “Mir geht’s auch gut. Ich lese gerade ein Buch über nachhaltiges Leben.” (I’m also good. I’m reading a book about sustainable living).
It felt so awkward at first, saying things out loud, but it quickly became a little more natural.
Diving into the World of “Nachhaltigkeit”
Alice was really interested in what I was reading. She asked, “Oh, wirklich? Das finde ich sehr wichtig.” (Oh, really? I think that’s very important.) And that’s where I really started to learn about this whole “Nachhaltigkeit” (sustainability) thing.
She explained that the book was mostly about how our consumer habits affect the environment. “Wenn wir mehr konsumieren, dann verschwenden wir Ressourcen.” (If we consume more, we waste resources.) It’s completely true, isn’t it? I’ve definitely been guilty of buying things I didn’t really need.
My Little Changes – and Your Ideas Too!
I told her that I was trying to buy less and fix things when they broke – “Ich versuche, weniger zu kaufen und mehr zu reparieren, wenn etwas kaputt geht.” (I’m trying to buy less and repair things when something breaks). It’s a consequence of my decision, she said, and she thought it was a great idea!
She was also thinking about buying more regional products – “Ich habe auch überlegt, mehr auf regionale Produkte zu achten, denn das hat weniger Transportwege und ist auch umweltfreundlicher.” (I’ve also been thinking about buying more regional products, because they have shorter transport routes and are also more environmentally friendly). It makes so much sense!
Then we started talking about food. “Wenn wir uns bewusst ernähren und weniger Fleisch essen, dann können wir auch einen Beitrag leisten.” (If we eat consciously and eat less meat, we can also make a contribution). It’s a direct consequence for the climate change, she pointed out. I’m definitely in!
Small Steps – A Real Conversation
It’s difficult to change habits, of course. “Es ist schwierig, sich zu ändern, aber jeder kleine Schritt zählt.” (It’s difficult to change, but every small step counts.) But it’s about making those small changes, right?
Then she suggested, “Vielleicht sollten wir mal zusammen zum Wochenmarkt gehen, um nachhaltige Produkte zu kaufen – das wäre eine logische Konsequenz unserer Bemühungen.” (Maybe we should go to the weekly market together to buy sustainable products – that would be a logical consequence of our efforts).
“Super Idee! Das machen wir!” (Great idea! Let’s do it!) we both shouted. “Sehr gut!” (Very good!)
Learning the Language (and the Local Culture)
That chat with Alice really highlighted something important for me: learning German isn’t just about memorizing vocabulary. It’s about connecting with people and understanding their values, like this passion for sustainability. And honestly, it’s helping me navigate Berlin – understanding the conversations, feeling more connected to the city.
I’m still making mistakes – I accidentally ordered “eine Currywurst” (a currywurst – a very popular Berlin street food) when I meant to say “eine Bratwurst” (a sausage) the other day! It’s hilarious, and everyone is so patient and helpful. I’m really embracing the learning process, and I’m so excited to see where it takes me.
Next step? The weekly market! Wish me luck! “Los geht’s!” (Let’s go!)
